crazyhorse001
Just like the title says...How do I disable the security system on my '97 Legacy. The battery has gone dead, and she won't take a jump because the dadgum lights are flashing! According to what I've found you have to START the engine to disable the security system. So are you hosed if it won't start?
3Pin
jump it, start and let it charge up a bit and then try this. http://www.cars101.com/subaru/keyless.html#code%20alarm Good luck!
edrach
The easiest way is to disconnect the positive terminal on the battery and charge it fully. After the battery is charged, start the car and actuate either the lock or unlock button until the lights stop flashing. You might luck out and get the lights to stop flashing without starting the car. I know this may not help since it's not a quick fix but it should get you back to running again. I'm going to be doing this tomorrow on my Forester since I have to change out the battery. If my advice doesn't work (I was told the technique by an experienced Subaru mechanic of many years) I'll be in the same position you are now. I'm wishing both of us luck. 2.5GL
remember to have the key in the ignition and turned to the "on" position when hooking the battery up, this way the lights will not flash, etc. then you should be o.k. lewis
crazyhorse001
Thanks 2.5GL I'd have left the switch off. Then I'd have been hosed again
edrach
By the way, I replaced my battery today. I didn't experience any problems with the lights flashing. Maybe the '99 Forester system is different, or I did all the right things. I disabled the alarm before I started, removed the battery and installed the new one. When I hooked up the negative terminal the alarm went off and I turned it off with the keyfob thingy. After that everything was normal. I wish you the same success. Edit: By the way, I had the ignition off before I started and never turned it on during the battery replacement.
2.5GL
It will work both ways, but if your key fob is dead and you don't care to replace it, turning the ignition on will save you the frustration of having it honk at you without a way to turn it off... if the remote works, letting it go off is fine... Hondasucks
Don't know if this works on all of them or not: First way is disconnect negative terminal of battery, turn key to ON, connect battery (or have key in ON position when you hook up the battery, or when you hook up the jumper cables) To turn the alarm OFF (This is how I do it on the 08s when I do a PDI, I do NOT know if it will work on an older one, but it should be in your owner's manual, if you don't have one, you can get one from Subaru.) Get in car, close all windows, doors, and hatch/trunk. Press "unlock" button on remote Turn key to ON Press and hold the "UNLOCK" side of the door lock switch, and open the driver's door within one second Keep the switch pressed for 10 seconds The new ones will beep the horn and show "AL Off" on the odometer display area, I do not know what the old ones will do, if the above will even work. screwbaru2
My 97 ob has a small toggle switch and a button to disable the sys. It's located on the left kick panel just below the dash. You got good advise about disconnecting the battery and charging. With the bat. charged key on press the button (if you have one) the lights should stop flashing. Turn the key off. I hate the system in my ob and will be removing it before I put it back on the road.
Flint
I would like to revisit this topic... Have a 97 OB that is in the shop right now for a timing belt, pulley kit & valve job. A few days before taking it in, all the dash lights quit working. I could not find any logical reason why. After the mechanic had the battery disconnected and then hooked back up, they started flashing. Saw the yellow label under the hood that tells you how to reset it with the key fob. Now the dash lights stay on all the time regardless of key in ignition or not and I can hear something like a flasher going somewhere in the dash. Any clues???
