Durania
The issue that I am having with my radio is the display not coming on. Before it would come on after about 5 minutes, and now that I have been driving it on a regular basis it doesn't come on at all. Is this a get a new radio situation? Also my speakers for the drivers side do not work, both front and rear. Could it be grounded against the door causing both not to work? Thanks, Kyle
john in KY
Sounds like it is on its last legs. Better to just replace it. Any Subaru radio from the 90s and even up into the 200s should be a plug and play. Have a single din from my 95 LS you can have for postage if you want it. Durania
Anyone ever have any thoughts about my speakers not working on the left hand side of the car? I have little experience with car audio but understand the basics. Could they be grounded out or could be linked to the radio going out? Thanks, -Kyle
Rooster2
Kyle, If you haven't done so, check the radio speaker balance controls. That is the radio control that variably adjusts radio (left to right) speaker volume output. It may have accidentally been adjusted so that only the right side speakers are operative. If when you adjust for more left speaker output, and the left speakers don't work, then I would suspect that the left channel on the radio output circuit has gone bad. If so, then it is time to replace the radio. Suggest finding a good replacement radio at a wrecking yard for a low price. It is an easy job to R & R a radio. Email me if you would like specific instructions, be glad to help.
Durania
Thanks for the reply Rooster. I have tried the balance knob and have had no avail. I have been doing some researching over at legacybbs on swapping in the 02-03 WRX 6 disc. I think it would be a good upgrade, but locating one in a reasonable price range is going to be the challenging part. Also considered getting one of the outback ones that came with the weather band radio. Thanks.

Since you have tried adjusting the speaker balance without success, a nice swap with a WRX 6 disc or Outback radio is a smart move. I have two Legy Outbacks with the weather radio. I never thought I would use the weather radio, but it has been surprisingly handy to have during bad tornado warnings and T storms.
bratman
Anyone ever have any thoughts about my speakers not working on the left hand side of the car? I have little experience with car audio but understand the basics. Could they be grounded out or could be linked to the radio going out? Thanks, -Kyle Kyle, I have a 1991 Legacy and just fixed the same problem myself this weekend. I have the "big" radio with the built in cassette deck. I lost the driver's side speakers a few weeks ago. I also use the input jack on the front of the radio for my MP3 player and would lose one or both channels when driving over a bump. Wiggling the connector would get things working again (for a while). Obviously a cold or cracked solder joint! I removed and dismantled the radio... it's very easy to take apart. All three connectors on the input jack had cracked solder joints. A little bit of handy work with my soldering iron fixed that issue. Regarding the speakers, I noticed that if I pushed the balance/fader knob firmly in and held it, the speakers would work. Suspecting bad solder joints, I re-soldered the connectors of the balance/fade knob to the circuit board and all is well. I would imagine that your display issue is related to bad solder joints or a corroded connector. My display is OK, but I lost the ability to use the EQ a long time ago. After completely disassembling and reassembling the radio, the EQ works now. I am planning on eventually replacing the radio with something with an HD tuner, but wanted to see if I could fix the factory radio just for fun. That said, it may not be worth your time to remove and repair your radio (took me about 3 hours). After all, a broken radio is an excellent excuse to upgrade! Durania
Thank you Gavin, Mine is the two piece radio where the tape deck is underneath the radio. When I was 16 I bought a nice JVC cd player for it and installed it and kept the tape deck underneath for a clean looking installation and loved it. I believe what I will eventually do whenever I get some money is throw up a wanted ad on the "wanted" forum for another Subaru radio; more likely one with the weather band. That is neat that you got yours' to work but just a few solders. I took a 45 minute drive last night and the display finally come on when I was about 5 minutes from home. Thanks for the input guys.
