the sucker king
what's up with the gen 1 engine (belt) driven fan? My '77 manual says they were on 4WD only. What was the point of this? I ask because mine seized up, and I figure the easiest quick fix would be a smaller belt that by-passes it. but while we are at it, does anybody have the dimensions or part #s for the bearings (I think there are 2) for the fan? Zefy
my brat never had one... just the electic fan... i would dump it and add another electric one if overheating becomes an issue...
Caboobaroo
I've wondered about them as well since neither my '79 wagon, the old '78 parts wagon or my '78 Brat had them.
waimaks
Every 4wd I've seen has it. Which reminds me. I really need to sort my electric fan
nipper
I thought they all had it in that year, and the electric came with the AC models. Maybe all the 4WD ones had ac? nipper
SUBARU3
Gen 1 4WDs and Gen 1 automatics ALL came from the factory with the aux cooling/belt driven fan. (or were suppose to). Most have disapeared by now with engine repairs and transplants. After market AC kits installed also had a belt driven fan. No Gen 1 came from the factory with AC. I'm unsure about gen 2 Todd
the sucker king
What was the point of the fan? My car runs nice and cool, in fact I don't even know if my electric fan works, I don't think it has ever gotten hot enough to kick on.

ls650v
I am the original owner of a 78 brat. It did not come with a belt driven fan. A single electric fan on right side of the radiator.
SUBARU3
The AC system was not installed at the factory. All the cars were "AC ready", with holes in the firewall and the air handler box capable. Of course there was the blue markings on the dash with "AC". The kits were made by Subaru of America "specifically" for the gen 1s. There were also some other kits made by Lone Star. The compressors were Sanden, or Mini Yorks. As for the cooling fan, all AC installs had one. You had to have one for efficient condenser cooling. As for "no AC/belt driven fans", the 4WDs were suppose to have them. But it might be possible that they stopped this with the stage 2s. I do believe every stage 1/ 4WD had that belt driven fan. My stage 2 4WDs had them without AC. Todd
gbrand
According to the service manuals I had for my 80 4wd wagon, the 4wd models came with the belt driven fan. But I bought mine from a import shop that had done an engine swap from jy and never got paid, it had the electric fan. so what was original and not who knows. As far as if you dont know if your fan works or not, if it dont work you will know-my fan control thermostat went out and it would over heat when stopped in traffic caus the fan wouldnt come on.
