does your oil cap rattle?

when my oil filler cap is tightened all the way it rattles from the motor idling. i can back it off a little and feel it get snug and the rattle stops. is it just wore out or is it some subaru engineering brilliance beyond my minds capabilities?

Possibly the rubber gasket in the there is hardened and shrunk.

 

You could try replacing that, but it doesn't always help.

 

I just bend down the tabs on the cap abit, so they grab tighter. Just had to do that for someone the other day. His was so looe it worked it' way off. I though he was just bad at remebering to put his cap back on after filling. But after 3 times in a month finding the cap on the splash gaurd, I believed him.

Here's what I do:

 

1. Put in a new gasket, if the old one is hard.

 

2. experiment with a few o rings (OD & thickness) under the gasket until you find the size that helps. This may or may not help.

3. Mostly, I do the back off until tight thing, don't go past the "bump".

I found a piece of cork cut to the correct diameter, worked a treat... I used the cork from a old rocket cover gasket, the bit that is left over when you buy new gaskets.

thanks.also a killer junkyard in newport called raceway. has anybody dealt with a place called subarus r us near asheville nc ? i pass it on the interstate but have never stopped. looks like they have a lot of stuff. as parts are getting harder to get maybe someone smarter than me could start a thread showing good junkyards around the country. thanks for the feedback.

Problem is not always with the cap. Often the tangs on the filler tube itself are slightly bent "up". A small tap with a SFH (small f....... hammer) will usually bend them just enough to make the cap snug again.

 

It's just a piece of stamped steel, not that hard to bend a tad. Spending money on new parts won't always fix everything. Sometimes you've gotta "engineer" a solution.

I just rebuilt one of our WCs last week. Haven't tossed all the parts yet. I know where the chain is going.
