ok so in my um... 1986 gl wagon with xt6 alt the fuel gauge sits at about a quarter tank with the fuel light on no mater how much gas is in the tank and the volt meter sits at just below 12 volt all the time when it used to set at about 15 or 16 and when i use the passenger blinker it bumps just off 8 and hte fule guage gose all the way up and pegs out. it only dose this on the passenger blinker the drivers dosent do it. also im having issues with charging sometime my battery has good juice and sometimes it barely turns the egnine over. the car has new cable ends, alt. is good, and i just relpaced the grounds and its still doing it. any one have any words of wisdom???

thanks Rob

How do you know the altenator is good. 15-16 volt reading is WAY too high and has probably damaged the battery.

Get the system properly load tested, with one of those nice old analog silver test boxes. The digital ones really are not that reliable, as the techs most the time dont know how to read them properly.

You need an altenator and probably a battery.

how's the plastic plug that plugs into the alternator? is that in good shape, clean, and good connection?

i agree with nip, many place now test for free- Advanced, Auto Zone...etc, find one that does and pay them a visit. they will test your alt and battery.

i'm also in agreement that you'll probably need another alternator. remember - XT6 alternators are now approaching 20 years old and most have been overworked by sub-par charging systems and battery failures by now...$1,000 cars don't get top notch quality care.

that is awesome though...fuel gauge...only when the p/s blinker it on...whacky.

Which is what makes me think it's not just an Alternator or charging issue.

Could be associated, but something else is going on.

I'm guesing(really, guessing) but I would look into all the common grounding points.

Or perhaps somewhere in the harness(under the carpet) is wet and corroded. I always suspect this when encountering electrical problems that *don't make sense*
