cazualty
Okay, first off, I have an '86 GL, 1.8L 4x4. I'm looking to update, make it more drivable, etc, since I'm going to be with this car for awhile, and I can't seem to give her up, she's been around for over 4 years now. My first question, which is relatively easy (and stupid, but what do I know about interiors)-- are all seats pretty much universal? Like, if I wanted to take out some bucket seats from a Mazda, could I fit them in my subie? They're both standard seats, nothing electronic. Are the tracks on the bottom a universal size? Secondly, since my car is older, finding parts is a pain. Any recommendations? Any particular types of car parts (subie brand included) that I could use? Numbchux
no, there isn't a universal design for seat mounting. But, the basic idea hasn't changed much. so you may find that mounting seats from other cars won't be too difficult. might have to drill some new holes in the rails or seat frame.....but probably nothing too difficult. as for the parts, I haven't had too much trouble finding what I need. if used parts are acceptable, the wanted section here. otherwise local parts stores, dealer, or http://www.rockauto.com (they have pretty much anything you can think of, and pretty good prices too!). oh, and happy first post!! Welcome to the Board. a 86 gl 1.8 4X4 is pretty vague. Is it a wagon/coupe/sedan(ea82) or is it a hatchback(ea81) what is the fuel system (carby for fuel injected) As a general rule, parts from like body styles will fit. most parts from an EA81 will work with an EA82. The first question that you need to ask yourself is "what kind of Soobie do I want?" Will it be a Daily driver, off-roader, 80's sleeper There are some great examples of all of these here. Then you need to ask "how good am I with a wrench?" stick around, do some searches, then figure out what you want to do with it. There are plenty of people here to help you and give you guidance but we can only help you, if you know where you want to go with this car. Nothing is more frustrating than someone wanting to do MAJOR car modifications, like an engine swap who has no idea how to loosen a nut. Have fun and keep it alive. BW[/quote'] Heh, I just woke up when I posted this, but here's the remainder f what you asked for: It is a stationwagon (e82) and a carb system. I need a new carb, by the way, but the carbs being sold are uber expensive around my neck of the woods (most parts here are American--I'm in Gainesville, a college town). I want a road type vehicle, something with a little more power than what I am getting, as I'm gonna have this car a little longer, which is by no means a problem with me. I travel a lot, so anything to make it more reliable and visually pleasing would be nice. As of now, she's just run down, and I love the car too much to get rid of it. She's been rather awesome, and always been there when I needed her. A couple things I would like to do is get better rims (nothing too fancy, spinners annoy me) but finding 4-spoke ones are so hard to find where I live, and shipping is a pain. I also saw something on here awhile ago about changing out the rear drum brakes with standard pad type from some other japanese car, but I can't find it. I'd do anything to have a better running car at this point, just want something within an acceptable price range. And I'm decent with a wrench, and have many friends who are, too, who love working on my car, so that's not a problem. She's fun to fix!
Numbchux
check out the ultimate subaru repair manual here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=54 will have the answers to most of your questions. I'd recommend just swapping for SPFI fuel injection from a later EA82. pretty simple swap, and will yield more power, better mileage, and better driveability. and yes, you can swap for rear disc brakes off of a turbo EA82. also a sweet upgrade!
