Knichol
I am looking swapping out my old R160's with 3.9 ratio in my 91 loyale and relpacing them with 1999 and a 2001 rear diffs out of 2.5RS's with the 4.44 ratio. Unfortuately I would have to buy them site unseen. Can anyone help me out and tell me if the New R160's are the same as the older R160's? I am assuming the basically are, but may have either, different mounting brackets or axle stubs. Thanks once again for the help.
idosubaru
i assume you already know that the rear diff ratio needs to match the front diff? not sure on your question but i have a hunch you won't have any issues. why is the title "98-2003" but you mention 99-2001 in the thread? are you looking for an LSD style? are they clutch or viscous LSD? Yes, thats why I am getting two! Sorry for the title difference. I believe that the 4.44 gearing was available from 98-2003 in the 2.5rs but the two specific years i am looking at are 99 and 2001. I am not looking for an LSD style. (I assumed they were open i am not too in tuned with newer subaur facts.)

idosubaru
Oh no, will not work!?!? it's up to you. depends how skilled you are or how much $$$$ you want to put into it. thanks for the well-wishing skip! I am looking swapping out my old R160's okay i think i missed the plural part of this question...you want to swap the front differential as well? do you know anything about that? rear diff = super easy. front diff = probably one of the tougher jobs to do yourself. it makes timing belt jobs look like beginners work and head gaskets appealing. if you're paying someone else to do it ($$), then no worries and continue on. to do it yourself, the "easiest" solution would be to swap in an entire transmission with a 4.44 final drive rather than trying to swap front differentials. if you didn't know this already then you're probably best off paying a shop to do this job. Knichol
I apologize for wording my question in a confusing manner. Let me try it again. Are all rear Subaru r160's interchangeable? If they are different how are they different? (axle stubs, flanges, mounting points, etc) More specifically do the late 90's early 2000s interchange with the older EA's r160? I honestly appreciate your other concerns but the question above is all I am looking for and answer for.
rguyver
They will fit in your Loyale but you will need the CV axles with them ! they dont use the pin and spline cups, the CV push in to the diff. , but you should be able to remove the inner joint from the RS CV and put in the balls and joint from the Loyale in the RS cups. Awesome... Do you know if you can convert it over to the external/male axle stubs, or is the only known way is to convert the axle? Is this what Storm was talking about in this thread? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=67019&highlight=differences+diff

rguyver
it would apear that is what he is talking about . but i swaped out my 83 Brat 3.9 R160 for a 3.5 2002 Wrx R160 the way i explaned , i also hope you know that the front diff is not a R160 ? as you are asking for swaping out two diffs ?? i would only asume you are have a EJ 4.11 tranny or have a lifted wagon with the Transfercase and extra rear diff in the front ? Knichol
details of what you're doing help understand the question better, future people to solve problems and fix things and add to the board. Ahh, I figured short and to the point so people don't have to wade through more info than needed (although I obviously put more than needed to get people ask'n other questions) that way, if someone needed to swap in newer rear ends in these old rigs, reguardless if they have a matched front diff, matched gearing in the trans, different sized front/rear tires, removed front cv axles, etc, they would have the straight facts... anyways it didn't work so well.
