msmithmmx
What a great day.. I have a 97 OBW 180K. The key snapped in the ignition. Now the bad.. That was my only key. How am I going to have it towed if I can't get out of gear? I guess I could pull the cable from the gear selector underneath the car.
GeneralDisorder
There will be a manual shifter release button - probably under a snap off cap around the shifter area. The key code is printed on the passenger door lock mechanism. Have one cut by the code, and take the ignition lock apart and remove the bit of old key. Should be able to fish it out if you have a few hours. GD
subaru360
To get an automatic out of gear without the key, pop off the trim around the shifter. In the front of the shifter there will be a hole. Stick a screwdriver in the hole and push down and hold while moving the shifter out of park. msmithmmx
At the base of my key (all I have left) is a 4 digit number. Is that my code and can a local locksmith make it?
msmithmmx
Could I bring that to Wallmart? with that code and have it cut?
jeffx
I snapped the key off in my hatch (98 OBW) not long ago. The key from the code DIDN'T work, the key the dealership cut from my spare did (of course you don't have a spare, sorry!)
GeneralDisorder
Could I bring that to Wallmart? with that code and have it cut? You would trust a walmart employee to cut a key? You are a lot more brave than I sir. Go to a locksmith - pay the $5. Keep a decent locksmith in business. No superstore has any business cutting keys with minimum wage employees. That's just asking for trouble. GD
ericem
I wonder if a locksmith does. Go to a Subaru dealership that's what I had to do.
nipper
I had to have keys made for my 1997. The dealer made them for me. Bring your title just in case. nipper

nipper
Herer is a silly question. Since the key broke in the cylinder, have you tried using a screw driver to start the car? nipper

tcspeer
You should be able to take the vin number to the dealer where it was purchased and they should be able to get you a key. As for as getting the old one out I have heard a small amount of super glue on the end of old broke key or paper clip might work just dont get so much that you gum up the switch. What a great day.. msmithmmx
Thanks.... Right on the money with that hole, I stuck a screw driver in and was able to move it out of gear.
