Partsman
HEY! Can anybody tell me real quick where the pcv valve is located on an 83 GL 1800 wagon? I looked at this vehicle with my customer and can't see it. Partsman (not MechanicMan)
GeneralDisorder
Yeah - it's on the intake manifold as I recall - it screws in, and with the hose attached it is pretty stealthy - just looks like a nut on a vacuum fitting or something - if you pull the hose off tho, then you'll see it.... Qman
Stand in front of the car. Looking down at the engine look to the back side of the intake manifold just right of the carb. You'll see the heater hoses and a large diameter hose that enters the intake. The PCV is right there. It does screw in with a 19mm wrench.
Hogsubie
Would the PCV location be the same on a 1981 EA81? I bought a new PCV and I can find anything that looks like my new part. I think they have it listed wrong.
Qman
Yep, same location. It just looks like a pipe fitting before you take the hose loose. Word of caution though. The hose will more than likely be brittle. If you unthread the valve first you can usually get the hose off without breaking it.
Hogsubie
Then Autozone does have the part listed wrong. The one the specified is shaped like an "F" I've bought the PCV twice now and it's the wrong part. Does anyone have a Brand and part #. Would NAPA be better than Autozone? ru4x4ever
@#&* Napa Or Auto Zone try a import part house, and take it off and show, then now confusion.
MilesFox
if you were to crack one of the plastic lines, standard 5/8 hose would be a suitable replacement. just run enough length so you dont have kinks in the bends
Partsman
NAPA part# 2-9254 - we sell it for $4.99 here. What's with the hostility towards NAPA? Jeez, as long as you give me the right info, I'll come up with the right part for you at this store! Partsman 88 GL wagon 5sp SPFI
GeneralDisorder
NAPA ia alright in my book - but I bet I can confuse your computer system.... NAPA has tried to tell me that I have one front wheel bearing on each side..... NO - there's an inner and an outer on each side... While I'm sure that you have perfectly reasonable intentions to give out all the right parts.... your computer system will fail you occasionally. I got my last PCV from a place called Discount Import Parts here local to me - got the right one. In fact - they have never given me the wrong part yet - but I'm sure it would happen given time. I think it was $2.99 or something... GD
Qman
I forgot to mention. Use only Factory Subaru PCV's. They work best. Others have a tendancy to suck oil. Don't ask why because I can't answer it logically. But all Guru's I've ever talked to about this have stated the same thing.
Partsman
GD - Yeah, the guys that code in "per car" amounts sometimes mess up. If I flip the screen to Beck-Arnley bearings, or if I pull out the bearing paper catalog there is a specific message that it takes two bearings per side; plus I know by having done the job (what an annoying sound when one goes bad!) My best advice is to find a parts person who you trust that is willing to go beyond "that's what my computer tells me, so it must be right." From what I have heard from customers who come in to me cussing about getting the wrong parts down the street, I think NAPA has the best cataloging in the aftermarket. QMan - You mean to tell me that if you put in my NAPA PCV valve into your car that is in good condition, that it will start sucking oil? Do you actually have experience with this? If so, I'll get mine at Subaru too! Partsman 88 GL wagon 5spd SPFI D/R
archemitis
its usually the dumb a$$ parts guy that thinks he knows everything. you say 87 hatch, and they think its the same as an 87 mpfi turbo. they assume its the thing. i know the brakes were at one time listed wrong in the computer. the books seem to be right, but they never touch those things. napa can be pretty bad, unless you drill the parts guy, and make him cross reference stuff. im a parts guy too, so i can bitch
Partsman
Like I said, find a parts guy who is willing to actually work to find you the right parts (who DOESN'T think he knows it all) and stick with him! Partsman (who doesn't know s**t, but is willing to look!)
subiemech85
once found an O'reilly guy that his dad worked on subaru 20 years ago, well, I had him look for a timing belt for an EA81
