What do I need? HELP!

Recommended Posts

Depends on the condition of the wheel bearings if you need more than the spindle or not.

As for a source - junk yard, or a member on here. They just drive the spindle out of the bearings with a dead blow or brass/copper hammer. Should not be much more than $10 - $20 at the junk yard, or ~$50 if you want the whole control arm/hub complete with bearings (easier to install). New rear bearings run about $50 a side. So unless you plan to reuse the bearings - which I probably wouldn't, but have in the past due to monetary conditions..... probably about a $10 fix if you just replace the spindle, or about a $50 - $75 fix if you replace the control arm, or install new bearings.

By far the best way would be to get a used spindle, clean it up, and install new bearings.

That looks like the back of a 2wd control arm. The adjuster bolt for the drum brake is a dead giveaway, only on 2wdsEA82 only, this is an EA81, read on. Perhaps someone replaced that arm at some point? But the strut mount is up high like a 4wd arm? 2wd spindle pounded into the 4wd arm???? IDK

Does the other side look the same??? I see a mustache bar, but what about the rest? Driveshaft? Axle on the other side?

Could be an EA81 backing plate with manual adjuster too. It's really hard to tell from the pictures.

Couldn't be a 2WD spindle in a 4WD arm as the spindles are WAY different and not interchangable.

Good point, he says it' a 86 2dr Hatch. So maybe it is an EA81 Hatch. I inda assummed it was an EA82

At any rate that look for all the world like a 2wd arm.

So, TheBush, We need some more info here. What excact car is this? EA81 or EA82?? What's the other side look like?

its a 1986 subaru ea81 hatch 4x4 D/R he got it from some guy in wenache who is on the board but i can recal his boardname. i cant remember if he puta 2wd arm on it but i do remember him saying it would need a new rear control arm in order for the 4x4 to work. if i was you i would call the PO. also jack the car up and spin the wheel if that spins too then its a 4x4 arm that has been snaped or cut but if it dosent its a 2wd arm those came with the back side welded. so it wouldent spin with the wheel.

just my .02

That is definately a 4WD control arm.

Refer to my previous post on how to fix it as it was correct.

I'm fairly certain what you are seeing is the very tip of the DOJ joint, complete with dust sheild. It looks to have been cut - through the end of the joint, and through the splined spindle. Ostensibly because the axle was rust frozen to the splines.

You can see the bearing ring nut beneath that trashed dust sheild....

Yeah, I see it now.

Looks like a new spindle and axle is in order. Don't forget the bearing seals as well. The inner one is surely trashed.

Might want to replace the bearings while you're at it. Or at least put some new grease in there.

with all the work involved it may just be easier to pull the trailing arm with the axle from a junker.

cnances are if the DOJ was cut off, then the 4wd nut and drum are seized(rusted) to the splines.

just get a junkyard part, and change the bearing in that if you feel its necessary. but i would only worry about that after you replace the part and see how it drives

Appreciate all the help...

Is it possible for you to help me find the right name for the right rear control arm...

Like when searching used auto parts and stuff....not sure what to look for when using the drop down menus...

Control Arm, Rear Upper

Control Arm, Rear Lower,

And if I chose rear suspension, it gives me so many options my head spins...

You simply are not going to be able to find the control arm online through a parts lookup. And even if you do you will still need the bearings and the spindle - they don't come with a control arm.

It's either a control arm, or a trailing arm - depending on who you talk to.

But seriously - PM Jerry - he will be able to help you I'm sure.

Frankly if it were me, I would have that thing apart in 20 minutes. Doesn't look that bad off. Pound out the old spindle with a deadblow, heat up the bearing housing around the nut area with a mapp gas torch or an oxy-torch, and spin that ring nut out with a brass drift. New bearings, a used spindle and you are down the road.
