DR tranny swap questions

Ok so I have been searching local junk yards for a DR and i realized there is a 4 and 5 speed. I obviously want a 5 speed but cant find one. In the event that a 4 speed turns up, i will possibly grab it. The big question is gearing in the final gear i guess. This wagon i drive is my Daily Driver, (i go on freeway often) and i want to keep the high end speeds. (75 at least) I will be upgrading tire sizes a bit to around a 195 70 R14 or so..... So will this all work together to give me about the same stock gear range? Sorry for the long question! and thanks for any help!

on paper, the 4-speed will work. but it would be a huge downgrade. very different tranny mounts, so you'll need to fab up a crossmember, and linkage is terrible (and frequently makes it hard to fully engage the gears, which leads to catastrophic internal failure!), and the tranny itself is a different length (I don't remember if you could use something from a different car or if you'll need to have one modified $$$).

short version.....be patient. wait for the 5-speed. it'll be worth it (even though with big tires you won't use 5th gear almost at all anyway).

Alright i have some pennies put away for a tranny and found the 5 speed today! The place already has it pulled and wants 175 no core charge. Sounds kinda high to me but i dont want to wait any more. So just to verify it will fit in bolt and play style? I wont have to get different tranny mounts Etc? And the shift linkage should fit through my current floor plan without cutting? Thanks

average going price would be around 125. 175 is more of a price including the flywheel and clutch and driveshaft and all that.

with he one you found today, make sure you at least have the shifter. if the shifter is not with it, or partially missing, try to offer up 150 instead.

really 150 would be a better price if you can get it for that

I need to move to your neck of the woods. The PnP's here in Cali want $200 for a D/r 5spd or any speed actually and that is tranny only:mad: .

where are you guys fnding 5spd tranies for $125-$150? the best price ive heard around here is about $250-$350 for the trans alone. i really want to find a full time 4wd dual range with dif lock like my friend has in his rx.

Good luck! If memory serves me right you have to find a RX or XT6 for that and those are your ONLY choices.
