TeamCF
Nothing too exciting. Just got to head up to Goat last minute and try out my new pugs. It was super sloppy out there and the tread is no more aggresive than my old 13's but the little added clearance seemed to make all the difference. Had to be careful though, got my new CAT on and I didn't want to smash it till I have a chance to DEQ the GL. Got a pic. Let the new wheeling season begin! TeamCF
Yeah once I have some more extra cash again I want to get something other than the all seasons that are on them. Still I can already tell the difference in wheelability. Some of the best goodie money I've spent so far on the soob.
chazmataz
awesome you finally got you some wheels!!!! what did you get 14" or 15"? after the tires start saving and looking for an LSD, that will help alot too.
fshnidiot
Nice!!! Those pugs look sweet on there. I'm glad your happy with them! I wasn't too excited with the traction those tires had either but atleast your up on 14's. Enjoy!!!! Frank

And they popped up for sale just at the right time.

Frank Even though they may not be the most ideal wheeling tires, the increase in clearance and diameter have helped a ton over the 13's. I took it down a really nasty muddy that I know would have had a go at holding on to my soob with the 13's. It just motored right on through. Ya, 14" fit better without alot of mods and if you have the factory suspension cranked up it works real well without much for mods. thats what i put on my 84 wagon just did a little trimming on the fender at the end of the wheel wells, no kick panel hammering like i did on my 86 but then i have way more tire on it then the 84. here a flex pic of my 84 during a camping trip a couple of years ago, which will hopefully be back on the road soon. TeamCF
Yeah I'm wondering if I can go with a set of 27" tall all terrains without a lift. Seems like I could and just have to rework some sheetmetal. Not too much though. I kinda want to stay away from the hacked off fenders look. I seem to have found a few different types of budget AT tires in the 27" size for 14 inch rims. AndI think 27" is as big as I wanna go anyway. After that I feel I'll just be cutting into the EA81's power. I don't usualy do the usual "blast over stuff" like it seems I hear is the norm for Subaru off-roading. I like to keep it in LO/1st and creep over/around stuff. If I lose too much low end I'll have to start blasting. Growing up my dad had an old Jeep with a 360 V8 and a Ford tow truck transmission. 1st gear was too low to even be used on the street, you always started in second (and you could lift the front wheels off the ground with that). But man could that thing crawl over stuff at an idle in 1st. I love that sort of thing but all I can afford to go wheeling is the old GL I already have. hehe. Makin' the best of what I got/can afford. And lovin' every time I go out. Which reminds me. Mike wants to go wheeling this weekend. I can proly (most likely, already warned the little lady) make it sunday. I've not heard back from him yet though. Interested? High up is gonna still be way snowed in. But what about on the colton side of Goat? Are there lower trails there with little or no snow? I've found a few good muddy trails around Estacada but they are short and driving much further up to find more just turns into lots of snow fast. Don't want to spend a day digging out of the Cascade Cement. Would rather do a few decent clear trails than try to get to a killer trail high up and have to shovel all day. chazmataz
did you guys go up??? i'm kinda screwed for this coming weekend to, need to work on my 84'. thats the problem with subarus the gearing sucks, alot of the times you have to blast to get over stuff. as far as fitting 27" you will probably have to do alittle trimming, on my 84' those tires started out as 25.5" and i had to do just a very small amount of trimming to get them to not rub. just at the bottom of the fenders at the end of the well openings but i could use about another 1/2-1" of lift which i'm going to try and do that would make it more of the stock lift height. TeamCF
Mine are about 25-26" on there right now. No rubbing, but my suspension seems to sit pretty high. All stock, just good springs I guess. And it looks like I have plenty of room to add another inch or so all the way around and still clear. Only when the steering is fully cranked will I need to have some body mods done. Mike had a family event come up. And his Sube broke an axle so he was fixing that sunday. I went out. It was pretty cool. Ended up running with a lifted Yota and a lifted Jeep. Up past Estacada. They showed me some nasty trails and were impressed that I was able to follow them down all but two of the trails they went down all day. Snow still gets nasty around 2,000 or so feet though. And cause it's deep and wet it just packs in like cement. Other than that everything was clear and muddy. Way super muddy.
