idosubaru
yes - play with the search function a bit and start reading. there are multiple options and it's really best to spend a bit of time reading and then with a little knowledge in hand ask these questions: cheap as possible, what's the budget? brand new engine? has to be a DIRECT fit, or minor tweaking okay? who's doing the work? Phizinza
I believe that model of Foresters normally have SOHC motors. So the first question would be, does a DOHC EJ fit between the "chassis rails"

Skip
I second Phizinza, the Forester is built on the Impreza chassis not the Legacy Size counts, but is the engine bay that much different ? Since Qman has done the 1.8 out -> 2.2 in swap that much is a given. Vis-A-Vis an EJ22 would be one candidate. Then fit is one thing, wiring is another and no mention if this car must have an IM sticker.
WoodsWagon
I think the OP was looking for a higher power engine. Swapping in an EJ22 would take them in the opposite direction. There's only two ways to go better than the SOHC EJ25 in your forrestor, A turbo 2.5 swap, or a 3.0 H6 swap. These are being done in the imprezza bodies, so you could do them to the forrestor just as easily. Both swaps are a lot of electrical work, so be aware it's not just plug and play.
