RMVR53
MPFI non turbo 1.8 Cold start problems. When cold, you can turn the key and it fires right up but but wont idle on its own for several minutes. Warm start it starts similarly but idles fine. In reading the archives, I can currently add that there are no codes, no loose vaccum lines, no ground problems, and no loose wires. Its only done this for about 10 years so its not like its a new thing...just getting tired of it. ideas? Bill
Skip
IAC valve (on top of the upper rad hose gooseneck) is knackered. (black object in below photo) If it were the FI coolant thermosensor it would not fire up as easy as you say. Might want to check it's contacts they do like to gather a green colored corrosion as seen here.

mikeshoup
I have no connectors on the thermostat neck...this is an MPFI not a SPFI And that's what Skip was referring to. On top of the thermostat housing is a little black device. That's the idle control valve. FSM refers to it as the AAV (Auxiliary Air Valve) Refer to the picture he posted. Its the round plastic looking device in the lower left. And if you don't have that device, then its not MPFI (since its an XT, it is MPFI), or someone replaced the thermostat housing with one from an SPFI/Carb vehicle, as they don't have the AAV. RMVR53
The only problem with that line of thought is there would be an unused electrical connector in the vicinity and there is nothing. I got the car it had 90k on it 11 years ago and the PO didn't touch the car so I know they didn't do anything to remove a plug from the harness. I have had the engine out once myself and the heads off once and not seen anything "unusual" from an electrical standpoint. Well, other than notice that Subaru is one of the very few manufacturers I've ever seen that made wiring harness' specific to a car/model. Meaning if you got a base DL and wanted to add air or even XT6 driving lights, there is no "extra" wires in the harness to add such a feature!! Gloyale
I have no connectors on the thermostat neck...this is an MPFI not a SPFI You have a spider intake correct??? You have the same device skip is talking about. But yours i mounted under the intake runners. About the size and shape of a screwdriver handle, It will have 2 hoses, and a 2 prong electrical connector. Hoses are thumb size, one from the intake tube, and one going to the throttle body. Remove it and clean it. Also you can put 12v to it and observe the valve function. It should be open cold, and close as it heats up. My guess is it is clogged or stuck closed. Skip
excellent catch by Gloyale what he says is dead on. Bill here must have 871/2 model after the switch to the spider manifold Well done G!! Thanks Mike for the correction. IAC: Idle Air Control (newer terminology) AAV: Aux. Air Valve (old gen talk as per the FSM)

Gloyale
Actually kip, that' the Fast Idle solenoid. Used to raise idle for A/C etc. Do you see the curved 1/2" dia. hose on the passenger side? That hose would connect to the Aux Air Valve. But it's not on the manifold in this picture
Skip
Sorry G, again my mistake. I used your description "About the size and shape of a screwdriver handle, It will have 2 hoses, and a 2 prong electrical connector." This looked like it. I changed the picture to correct this. That hose you mention is to the PCV valve I believe, is that correct? I will get another picture to correct my second error here if I have the correct AAV, and then let you handle it if Bill replys... again sorry for the mis-information. RMVR53
Reply?...hey, I'm learnin here! Unfortunatly, Im a visual person and not real good with delving into technical books so a picture says more...lots more...than a thousand words!!! thanks guys Bill Sorry G, again my mistake.I used your description "About the size and shape of a screwdriver handle, It will have 2 hoses, and a 2 prong electrical connector." Skip
Sorry again Bill, I was having a bad moment. I am "all about" pictures, like you, sometimes a page full of diatribe can be shown with one anotated picture. (IF it's correct, luckily we have good techs here like Gloyale to catch mistakes mad by well to do'rs like me) 12 deg F right now, hoping it will warm up a bit and I'll go out to the shop and see if there is one of these in inventory. I'm pretty sure I know what G is talking about just need to see if one of the spider sets ups I have has it.
Skip
Okay Bill, hope this helps. The other shot fits on this section of the manifold. Sorry for the grease and grime, hope your's is cleaner. RMVR53
and you say I should first try and clean it (carb cleaner, etc on inside, etc) and check connection, etc...? Also, any idea what voltage should be on it cold? thanks ya'll Bill Okay Bill, hope this helps. The other shot fits on this section of the manifold. Skip
Clean it with carb or FI cleaner. 12 Volts (battery voltage) on the plug, from fuse #12. These plugs are tuff to get off sometimes. I use two pieces of 18 AWG solid core wire inserted under the clip. It pulls off after doing this. Seen here on the other type AAV Hope this helps.
