mikekucharski
Hello all, My name is mike... im a new mechanic and Im trying to replace my clutch on my 2wd 92 loyale anyways, ive got everything out except the transmission. The damn thing is stuck or something. It wont slide, is there any prying neccesary? I dont want to force it incase Ive forgot something. Ive taken out the four transmission mounting bolts, and disconnected everything else my haynes book has told me. Actually Ive been having trouble getting the front crossmember completely out, the clips are rotating as Im trying to loosen the nuts which attach the crossmember to the tranny. The only thing I havent done is change the pitch on the engine and I dont have tools to change the pitch nore do I really want to move the engine. Does anyone have ANY tips for me.... am I missing a bolt? how can I get this tranny down?!!! Ive been fusterating on this for a while and I need this car to be fixed so that I can get home for christmas.... Thanks again for all your help... you guys at this site have gotten me out of jams before and Im hoping you can help again. Mike
Qman
Sounds like it may be stuck on the pins. They can't really be seen from outside. Also make sure that the flat washers are removed on the lower bolt/studs. I have seen them stick before. Are you getting any separation of the engine and trans? There are 2 nut/bolts and 2 nuts that bolt the trans to the engine. The crossmember shouldn't need to come off the trans to drop the trans. Have you removed the starter? It will need to be removed to get the trans back far enough to clear the clutch assembly. Once you have everything off and loose you may have to wrestle it around a little bit to get some separation. Once you get it to start to come apart you can assist it by GENTLY placing a flat screw driver or prybay between the engine and trans. Slowly work your way around the bellhousings and it should slip apart. Make sure to have it well supported by the jack. Also make sure the clutch cable and speedometercable are disconnected and that all electrical connections are unhooked. That should give you enough to get it loose and out. Good luck. calebz
In addition, Make sure the starter has been pulled. I know that sounds a little obvious, but it has been missed by others.
mikekucharski
Ive removed the starter, and all electrical connections. In addition Ive taken off both halves of the clutch cable assembly. The bolts on the top half of the engine/trans have been removed and the nuts on the lower half have also been taken out(you can still see bolts which are sticking out but no washers). Also the crossmember is loose, and the rear half of the tranny to shifter rod and stay are out. Some new Qs... About how much do you jack up the transmission? Hoe long is the shaft inside engine? How much does the tranny weigh? I'm more or less looking for the technique you would use get this freaking thing free... Thanks for the reply Qman... Im about to go out and start wrestling with this tranny again.
GeneralDisorder
You can remove the engine pitching stopper to get the tranny to "hang down" farther, and thus a better angle for removal. The tranny is not light - probably 100 - 125 lbs I would say. I can lift one and carry it around by myself for a little ways, but not far as they are quite awkward. With two people it's a breeze to carry one around. The input shaft of the tranny doesn't go inside the engine - just into the clutch plate - sicks out from the bellhousing a couple inches. This shouldn't hang you up tho. Technique..... brute force and ignorance works well for me. You will need to lift up a bit on the back of the tranny while sliding it rearward because they are heavy and will bind up on the bolts and the pins if you don't take the weght off them. DO NOT be under the thing when you get it free - they are heavy, and awkward and could easily snuff you out if you happenend to be under it when it fell out. Also - if you can't get the tranny out - it might be easier to pull the engine. Often times this can be just as easy as pulling the tranny. RenaissanceMan
Its light enough that when your under the car yanking on it, and then it slides out and falls on you, that it doesnt break anything, but its heavy enough that it hurts. One time at the junkyard the shifter arm came fractions of an inch from taking out my eye. To say the least, its just smarter all around to put a jack under it when you're taking it out. I remember one time I had a problem like that where the bellhousing was corroded shut to the transmission, because of those two little alignment dowels. After enough persuasion it came free. Nug
Smack the alignment dowels around with a punch and hammer. They always get stuck, and they might need more than a little persuasion.
mikekucharski
where are these alignment dowels?
Nug
If I recall correctly, there are two, one on either side of the bellhousing. Maybe down the side a little. Frankly, I don't know in your case, but I know they are there.
MilesFox
its easier to remove the crossmember from the body, with the transmission atatched. makes easier to put it in, also
