john in KY Posted March 2, 2008 Share Posted March 2, 2008 Make darn sure that little transmission input shaft is fully seated inside the transmission. When you get around to bolting it all togather and it seems like the bellhousing is hanging up 1/4" short of being fully seated, stop. It is and if you continue you will break the internal pump. idosubaru Posted March 2, 2008 Share Posted March 2, 2008 get one of the torque converter holes lined up through the inspection hole in the bellhousing. then hold it there while rotating the engine (flexplate will move with it). when it's lined up your done. and like john said - if the engine and transmission bellhousing don't seat flush before bolting those two things together it's not fully seated. actually the torque converter bolts should draw the torque converter "out" of the transmission about 1/8" so to speak. not doing that right risks ruining the transmission, see a couple of those a year where people don't know or assume it's right. STi 22B Posted March 2, 2008 Share Posted March 2, 2008 The best way Brian is pull that auto tranny and put in a 6 speed... hehe Sorry mate, had to be done but seriously it is really easy to move the TC with your finger, so line up 1 of the 4 flex plate holes with the centre of the inspection hole by turning the front crank pulley (making sure only to turn the engine in the normal direction), then just put your finger in the large gap in the flex plate and turn the TC until it lines up, you may need to have a good light to see in the hole. Please just be carefull that the battery is disconnected and the keys are not in the ignition. Once you have the first bolt in place, don't tighten it up all the way, just hand tight, so you can get all the others aligned. Once you have all of them in (4), go ahead and tighten them up nice and firm. Also a nother point to remember is try and put the bolts in with a telescopic magnet, as you really dont want to drop any of im the bell housing and have to pull the motor out again. I tried rotating the TC with my finger, but it wont move. Maybe im not trying hard enough. Its kinda tough cause the access hole is in a wierd spot. I got the intake manifold and turbo in my way.
