AAhem...a power downgrade this time

I am slotting an EA71 in a 1990 Brumby for an emergency measure..

 

A primary work ute is down for the count and urgently needed.

 

A good friend (non member, yet non internet and non mobile phone farming type sort of a bloke..bought the brumby new though so RESPECT at 330,000kms)

 

We cannot find an EA81 on the Island.

 

Is there any pitfalls

Which clutch would be best?

 

Suggestions?

 

Anyone done the reverse?

 

It all goes down on the weekend so please pipe up ASAP.

the things that come to mind are wether or not the ea71 is a fatcase or not.meaning that the starter hole is still where it should be.as opposed to on the top.

 

 

if the starter hole is on the top you would need to change it out with a bellhousing that has the starter hole on the side in normal position.

 

now, i do not know personally that changing out the bellhousings is posssible.but your smart enough to figure somethin out if need be;) .cheers, brian

the bell housing is the key.... but also the flywheel. I don't know if the ea81 flywheel would mount up to the ea71 crank? if it does not, you'll need to use the ea71 pressure plate and 200mm clutch. I'm guessing that the original clutch woyld have been a 225mm...

 

if you do have to use the smaller pressure plate, then you will need to find the smaller release bearing holder as well. in the US, the 4WD's up through '82 used a smaller holder and smaller release bearing, then upscaled it when moving to the 225mm clutch kit.

The EA-82 engine will fit between the frame rails of a 2nd Gen, with about 3/8" clearance per side. It's an alternative if you can't source all the parts to put the EA-71 engine in.

 

I can give you the details on shoe-horning the EA-82 engine in if you want them.
