mellow65
with a ej22 swapped into a ea81 can you use a awd tranny? assuming you get a 3.9 tranny out of an impreza to match your rear end ratio and you might need a new drive line made. what front axles would you have to use to make it work? Also would you have to rework the tranny mount to get it to fit?

mellow65
Johnson']You want an EJ tranny in there? behind a ej22, it would be a small little awd go cart. not looking to do a lift, just a bigger motor and then awd i think it would be a fun little car. DR are cool, but frying your front tires when you try and take off would get old real quick.
GeneralDisorder
It's been done. Axles aren't impossible if you have skills with metal. The hydro clutch swap is actually worse than the axle IMO. Although the early legacy trannies are cable if you aren't going to run much in the way of HP above a stock phase 1 EJ22..... Talk to Rguyver - Reagan has a complete WRX drivetrain in his Brat. mellow65
kind of figured it out today while over at pooparus place. you would just need to use ea82 turbo axles. they are same length as the ea81 fronts but share the same 25 spline as the legacy/impreza trannys. so not unless the front hubs are a different spline they should work. and you can run cable on any NA tranny. i have a 03 rs tranny in my 90 legacy it's all about the clutch fork. i just reused the 90 one and it worked fine. and we will see what a older legacy tranny will hold to more power, i think i F-ed up the rs tranny at the doo wop rally so I'm going to put my old tranny back in and see how she holds up to the 2.5rs motor. Nope - EA81T's used the same axles as N/A EA81's. I have heard rumor that early 2WD legacy DOJ's will swap to the 2WD EA81 axle shafts - but I haven't seen definitive evidence to support that. There's probably some combination that would work, but a 2WD EA81 axle isn't exaclty my idea of reliable with the HP the EJ can put down - they are wimpy, small, pathetic things. EA82T axles are longer - as all EA82 axles are. They will not fit the EA81 body width. Also the outer joint seal lip is the wrong size. and you can run cable on any NA tranny. i have a 03 rs tranny in my 90 legacy it's all about the clutch fork. i just reused the 90 one and it worked fine. Yes - it's the turbo Porsche style clutch's that are messy in the EA81 body. If you just want an NA, then that shouldn't be difficult. and we will see what a older legacy tranny will hold to more power, i think i F-ed up the rs tranny at the doo wop rally so I'm going to put my old tranny back in and see how she holds up to the 2.5rs motor. It won't. Visit legacycentral.org for lots of stories of failed trannies. The turbo tranny is stronger, and they still grenade them without any trouble at all. Usually strips 1st or 2nd gear right out of them. GD

GD but who wants a turbo tranny behind NA power. not worth it. and all subaru trannys are made of glass, they last as long as you want to shift nicely. the 1st and 2nd go bye bye when you try to do crazy launches on pavement. i'm using mine for rally, much more give. but i still don't do any hard launches, i like my clutches and trannys to much to do that. GeneralDisorder
An RS-RA gearset will fix them nicely - but the cost is rather unpolite. GD

I have swapped DOJs from a 93 AWD Legacy onto 2WD EA81 axle shafts - this works - absolutely no problem. I'm putting a Legacy tranny into my hatch. I've made the axles but I haven't done the swap yet. I know that the axles may not last, but I know they will last long enough to get my swap rolling. When they grenade I will have an axle shop put together a custom set that will last.
