pearlm30
I went to a coupe of junk yards and found some nice 95/96 wagons that were in accidents. I would like to pull the trany out of them but dont think the junk yard provides any crank on wheels. So 1)whats the best easy way to get them out? 2) If I can rent a crank, would it be easier to remove engine and trany as a combo, then seprate engine and trany on floor? What needed to removed to do this? 3) Any other advice? Thanks
idosubaru
will depend a lot on how the vehicle is set up and what conditions/tools you have to work with. without lifts and such i'd be tempted to drop it underneath and drag it out from under the car. but the car will have to be up off the ground high enough to do that - jack it up? and yes if you have an engine lift you can pull the engine and transmission as a lump, they'll come out if you get the angle right and it can lift high enough. nipper
I vote for dropping it too. Make sure the ground can support a hoist. It sucks to get the engine and tranny out and then you cant move it (been there done that). Do they have a fork truck? Slip the operator a little cash and after you have everything disconnected he may do you the favor. nipper
bheinen74
i say drop it out too. but first get 4 jackstands and get the car up about 1 to 2 feet higher than normal...... remove flexplate bolts first at the little access hole on top right . disconnect engine bolts, starter, shift linkage, dogbone, both electrical wiring, speedo cable, and CV Axles. now remove the driveshaft, maybe exhaust mid pipe. then remove the tranny mount bolts to the subframe and it will come right out. subaru360
If its an auto it's tough to get it out the top with the engine, but it can be done. Five speed comes out the top with the engine ok. My favorite yard has all the cars sitting on stands. They don't allow any jacks in the yard, but you can rent a big hoist on wheels. To get a trans I usually unbolt everything, then grab a tire and put it under the trans. Slide the trans off the studs onto the tire, pull the tire out and then drag the trans out from under the car. It's a dirty messy job, but I can get a trans cheap so it's worth it. Pulling junkyard engines is much easier, I have it down to about an hour now.
