xt6 vs. RX vs. Impreza

I know, three very different cars, I'm looking at one of the three to be the winter beater / ice racer / rally x. Relability is the number one factor, the 2nd being performance and handling.

Which would handle the best? I would think the Impreza given the huge aftermarket support. Stock vs. stock who would win? I always thought the Xt6 was the ruler of the older subarus untill I read all 27 pages of threads about the RX (yes the search feature works with "*RX*" to get around the stupid 3 letter rule)

It seems like headgaskets and cv's/axles seem to be the common spots for the older subarus. Any advice?

Impreza is the only choice, there are so much more after market stuff out there for them then the EA82 series (RX included). The XT6 is about the opposite, there is almost nothing out there for them. Stock for stock race, RX vs XT6 vs which Impreza???

EJ22T wins hands down for reliability and performance, and support (aftermarket and dealer). But personally, I don't think Imprezas have as much character as the older Scoobies. I'd go with an XT turbo, but an XT6 or RX sedan is a good low-budget ride.

Stay away from the EJ18 if you're after performance and you do get an Impreza.

EJ22T was never in an impreza...EJ22 was from 95? on.

for reliablity and being able to withstand being beat on, and be driven home after the race - the impreza hands down. an RX is too unpredictable...i have a built-up XT turbo with the same drive as an RX and it never fails to leave me scratching my head...we have a love/hate relationship. i love it, it hates me...XT6s are an oddity all in thier own, and with that - parts cost $$$$$$.

a 5spd EJ18 would still eat a stock EA82T for lunch, and most after market EJ25 and EJ22 stuff could be persuaded to fit this engine. it is essentially an EJ22, minus .4L

They've been running the EJ22 since '90 in the Legacy and since inception of the Impreza I believe. The EJ22T will take the most abuse but I don't think they ever put it in the Impreza. And the Legacy is kind of big/heavy for rally. At least to compete with the Imp's and WRX's

The 2.5RS Imp's are starting to come down in price. There are ton's of aftermarket support for those.

It'd would be an early Impreza, EJ18 maybe EJ22 in a perfect world, then a 2.5 swap later on.

I kinda figured on the Impreza, while I agree, not a much character and cool stuff like locking diff's and D/R trannys, I would think have huge aftermarket support.

Thanks for the other info!

What about an EJ18 body with a blown engine and a totalled EJ22T Legacy for the engine? I meant swap in an EJ22T, so what if they never came from the factory that way? One of this board's members has an H6 Brat, for heaven's sake.

XT6 has my vote. If I wanted a "fun" car for weekends (and my weekends didn't involve camping/tag saling/antiquing), that would be my first choice. But for general use/abuse, an Impreza wagon with a turbo powerplant swap would be fun, and the ultimate sleeper. (And the wagon has more weight over the rear wheels, too--better handling.)

Please note that this is only an opinion, and that I probably won't own an Impreza for at least the next 5 years; have never had an XT6; and passed up on the only RX that crossed my path.

2 members have H-6 Brats.

I see them do the sort of rallying he wants to do and they are not as competitive.

I know that the original WRC cars were Legacy's. But, did anyone notice how fast they dropped it when the Impreza came out? If you put the Legacy and Impreza side by side and compare there really is no need for this discussion.

The XT6 is a good option. The 2.2 turbo transplant is also a good option. You can turbo a 2.5 N/A motor. It is being done here Rallitek

The car will aid you in performance but only seat time will make you competitive. If you go with a stock Impreza, even a 1.8, you will be able to run in the lower classes and gain experience before you force yourself into an open type class.
