ok.....as some of you know my current problems with my 96 legacy ej22 have been with the clutch....well that is all replaced and working wonderfully.....now on the drive home today my suby started popping out of 4th gear you could go down and move it out than right back in again but now every time i put it in 4th it pops right out.....this is the origional trans with almost 190,000 on it......so do i go ahead and remove the trans for a 3rd time to put in a good used unit?......i know i would have to call around for prices but what are the going rates where you guys are for a 5 speed manual trans out of a 96' legacy?.....any help or insight would be appreciated......:)

I had a very similar problem with my 99 outback and the problem was a set of mismatched tires. The AWD system didn't like the tires that the previous owner had put on and once I put on a set of matched tires the problem dissappeared.

mdjdc- what was your fix?......i just took a drove to get some gas and i feel like a looseness when i let out the clutch....it may sound stupid but i think the whole trans was moving slightly when i shifted......i better double check all the bolts for the crossmembers/driveshaft etc etc.....the last thing i want to do is replace a trans that isnt bad..... thanks again for all the ideas fellas.....if you have anything other ideas i will give it a check........

It wasn't a SUB but a MITSU Montero that I had popping out of 5th problems - what it turned out to be was bad BEARINGS (of course, a different trans layout) but the problem sounds almost identical. Would just jump out of gear by itself whenever it felt like it on decel. the mainshaft bearings were both bad. I solved it by getting a different trans and swapping guts

yeah the only thing im missing is that little spring that keeps the tension on shifter knob....i dont think that would do it though......the shifter bushings dont seem that bad.....i would like the get the spring on there and see how things feel before i go ahead and replace the bushings........i will get it in the air today and double check that everything is tight......but this started happening even before i just did the clutch.....it stays in every other gear just fine 1,2,3,5........what i do notice is that when the shifter is in gear and im cruising..when i push on the gas the shifter kind of jerks further into gear, than the same thing happens when i let off the gas.....is this any indication of anything?..........Subaru 360.....were is harrys U pull it?

with the trans "pulling" harder into gear and the releasing when the throttle is lowered, it's internal - probably a bearing in thrust going bad.

Like I said, I don't know Sub trans at all, but it's what my Mitsu was doing before it ate the CLUSTER gear when one of the cluster gear bearings failed.

ok well i found out that one of my bolts for my front cross member came out......so that was the awful noise i was having......all mounts are good and linkage is tight........i tried to put it in 4th again today and BAM it pops right out........also 1st gear is starting to whine........all this on top of the need for a new Viscous coupler....well rather than deal with everything seperately i ordered a used Trans out of another 96' in Rhode island....the place is called LKQ....we use them for pretty much every engine and trans. we replace at work......it even comes with a 6 month parts warranty.....i spoke with them extensively and they said if anything happens internal within those six months they will get me another trans for FREE.....so i said "does that include the center diff." he said YES......so i got another trans on the way....hopefully here by thursday they said......they also said that it was out of a Subaru with 93,000 miles.........all that having been said I paid around $500 for it including delivery............Back to the bolt that fell out......is there any way to kind of rethread that bolt hole (its in like the body of the car) i noticed it was almost fully stripped and was thinking about running a tap through it....any other ideas?....also the thing that was weird was that while the hole is like completely stripped the bolt threads are almost perfect........nonetheless if anyone has anything they think will help or any comments please post......i hope that i am closing in on the end of my trans problems........:-\

as for the stripped bolt, chase the threads and find another identical but longer bolt. the longer bolt may reach threads that are deeper than the original and therefore untouched. i do that all the time on stripped engine bolts, there's a chance body bolts may be similar.
