What is this?

Recommended Posts

If I am not missing something my Haynes wiring diagram shows two things it could be:

The obvious one is fuel pump control unit that Turbone suggested. Diagram shows a box with 6 wires.

The inobvious is labeled as a seat belt timer. Diagram shows a box with 7 wires. With seven wires it must do something in addition to timing seat belts. It's near the glove box area. It doesn't seem likely though.

I think I count 9 wires in your picture, so the diagram doesn't match perfectly in either case. The wire color coding looks a lot like some of the wires I spliced when I removed my external voltage regulator ('81 hatch), which I know your '82 doesn't have, but I would put my money on the fuel pump control unit. It ain't much, but it's all I got.

The FPCU is mounted on the DS kickpanel behind the fuse block, and is about the size of a deck of cards. So that's not it.

Don't recall seeing anything like that item when I gutted my '82 BRATs interior. I'd have to go out and look at things to be sure though. The BRAT is a California model, had feed-back carb with the ECU under the steering column.

Wow, I thought someone would know this one right away. It is a strange box, and it wasn't mounted very well ether. As soon as I unscrewed the center screw from the little tray that sits under the glove box the thing just dropped out onto the floorboard. It was only held on by a single screw going through a thick zip tie. It was hooked up to the motor and I think the coin as well, but when I did my ej swap I got rid of all of that so the wires weren't connected to anything and they didn't run back to the main harness or fuse box so I just simply pulled it out. I'm afraid that it might be the ignition control unit, but I don't know where that is. According to my wiring diagram it has the same amount and same color wires as the diagram, but I can't imagine that Subaru would mount something this important so carelessly. I'm really racking my brain here to get this thing running again. It's killing me:mad:

if it was mounted using a screw thru a zip tie, my guess would be that somewhere along the line it was relocated by some PO. Subaru would not mount something in that fashion.

if you cant find the ign. control unit anywhere else, and you say the wiring count/colors match the diagram, then I would suspect that this box IS your ign. control unit....

What diagram are you looking at?

The only "ignition control unit" for 82 is the module inside the disty.

What is the "coin??" it was hooked to?

Not sure, but,I think it might be the timer for the belt/door chime.

However,as mentioned,the wire count/plug shape seems incorrect.

Does the chime still work?

oops, I mean the carb. not coin. Yes the door chime still works. I'll put some more photos up tonight.
