pearlm30
I did some reading about trany removal. I dont have the correct tools for the job. Where can I buy these tools and what do I need? I do have the basic tool set. I know so far I will need 1)trany jack, 2)trany adapter plate( is there one made specially for 4EAT?) 3)Belt straps to secure trany on the jack? anything else??? Thanks

Thanks I used the Harbor Freight tranny scissors jack. You need heavy jack stands. An electric impact wrench makes things go faster. A good torque wrench. U-joint socket connectors help. A camera. Somethign to support the engine from the front/ I made a crosspiece with a u-hook that bolted to the AC bracket and let me adjust the angel up and down. Replacement bolts and gaskets for the exhaust. A replacement "split ring" for the TC shaft.

Thanks You don't really NEED any of that, it just make it a little easier. I just use a regular floor jack to swap them all the time.
scrapdaddytatum
a regular floor jack with an trans adapter on it, a couple of ratchet straps, 4 real tall floor jacks( or lift), 14mm wobble and 17mm wobble sockets will help alot at getting to main bolts and starter bolts, a real long extension(30"),, the transmission is REAL DAMN HEAVY, be carefull, and DRAIN IT FIRST a block of wood inbetween the alt and the rad will kepp the engine from rocking to far, a second jack to help with engine angle will be a great help when reinstalling leave the torque convertor attached to the transmision at ALL TIMES unbult it from the engine first and bolt it up last and dont forget the wiring, trans cooling lines and cable shifter all need to be undone too hope this helps and good luck its heavy, break your fingers heavy, trust me i know
NorthWet
...the transmission is REAL DAMN HEAVY, be carefull,... ...its heavy, break your fingers heavy, trust me i know This can't be emphasized enough. It is far heavier than the engine, and awkward to boot.
pearlm30
I found this Trany Jack on Harbor freight http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=3185 my concern is the bottom of trany(trany pan) is not flat, so can the trany seats on the jack been stable enough for me to shake and pull on without falling off or just slide around on the jack even with chains and straps tie around the trany? Or there is a special adaptor made for only subaru 4EAT trany? Thanks again a regular floor jack with an trans adapter on it, a couple of ratchet straps, 4 real tall floor jacks( or lift), 14mm wobble and 17mm wobble sockets will help alot at getting to main bolts and starter bolts, a real long extension(30"),, the transmission is REAL DAMN HEAVY, be carefull, and DRAIN IT FIRST a block of wood inbetween the alt and the rad will kepp the engine from rocking to far, a second jack to help with engine angle will be a great help when reinstalling leave the torque convertor attached to the transmision at ALL TIMES unbult it from the engine first and bolt it up last and dont forget the wiring, trans cooling lines and cable shifter all need to be undone too hope this helps and good luck its heavy, break your fingers heavy, trust me i know
screwbaru2
You are correct about the tranny not sitting stable on that adapter. I have one. I modify it depending on what tranny I'm working on. I drilled holes in it that I threaded where I can bolt down a tranny. Made brakets that I bolt to it and bolt to a tranny. I use differnt mods for different trannys Might try a couple of clinch straps the kind with the ratchet you can get real tight. Wedge the tranny on the adapter so it's stable then strap it tight Dosen't hurt to have a helper to assit and/or get the tranny off of you!
