msmithmmx
I purchased the front wheel bearing OEM for my 98 OBW. It looks packed! should I use the factory greese or is there something better out there?
Subie Gal
you still need to repack that bearing see - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=787070 Jamie
aircraft engineer
hi-pressure wheel bearing grease. Fill 'er up! Some say you don't need to add more - I can't see why it would hurt to have it "packed" (one of those "grease pressure packers" would be a lot CLEANER, though)
nipper
Don't mistake that "grease" for shipping additive. It looks like grease, but is only to protect the part from rusting. I usually wash the bearings then repack them. nipper
jamal
not true. New Subaru bearings come packed with acceptable grease. There's mention of it in an endwrench article somewhere.

msmithmmx
It does read as..... "Prepare the new tapered roller bearing for installation. Do not remove the bearing stay (plastic piece inside the bearing) at this time" Note: Do not disassemble the bearing. Do not add any grease to the bearing. jamal
it's a high temp synthetic grease. Also the last time I asked a Subaru mechanic he said you don't need to re-pack them but he does anyway.
porcupine73
hehe Neo Synthetics HP800 wheel bearing grease. I like it for brake caliper slider pins. I usually get it here http://www.stockcarproducts.com/wheelbrg.htm Many like http://www.bakerprecision.com but those guys never filled my order and did not return my several phone calls or e-mails. hohieu
Mobil 1 grease works too and is readily available. That Neo stuff looks good, but I suspect that it's not the breakdown but rather contamination or absence of grease that causes bearing failure. In othe words, when worn seals allow contaminants in and grease to leak out, this spells doom for the bearing.
blaze
I purchased the front wheel bearing OEM for my 98 OBW. It looks packed! should I use the factory greese or is there something better out there? Just picked up my rear bearings and seals from the Subaru Dealer yesterday for my 98 OBW. The service tech came over and pulled the bearings out of the boxes and stated these don't come packed correctly. They repack all wheel bearings, and I should repack them with any QUALITY (he really stressed QUALITY) wheel bearing grease of my choice.
msmithmmx
Do I need to clean the grease out that came with the bearing? if so what shoud I use?
tcspeer
I clean mine with brake cleaner (spray can type) then repack with high temp. wheel bearing grease, but blow dry bearing good before repacking. The first bearing I done I left the grease in it that came with the bearing, lasted about one month. However the hub also had play in it so I dont know how much damage was done from grease and how much was because of the bad hub.
