porcupine73
notches The notches are for timing. The arrows are for piston position.

TheSubaruJunkie
Align the marks with the notch on the cam pulley, and the notch on the crank sprocket. There are arrows on each pully and sprocket... DO NOT USE THE ARROWS!!! Use the mark on the backside of the crank sprocket. I used the wrong mark when doing my EJ22 and had to redo my belts after dropping the motor back in. aircraft engineer
EVO is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT - IF you follow the article you will be PERFECT. LOOK at the crank cogged pulley, too (the one RIGHT BEHIND THE DAMPER - it's the BELT DRIVER, the others are "followers"). Either the 5th "pin" will be "up" (pointing at the "timing mark") or it will be DOWN - then you need to turn the crank 1 full turn and make it all line up CORRECTLY. those other 4 pins are the "firing position" for the respective cylinder and are 90 degrees apart. The "odd one" is the "timing belt position". I'm talking about whether the CAM marks line up and the CRANK mark DOESN'T. All 3 need to be aligned BEFORE you take off the old belt or you are just asking for trouble. The ONLY issue you may have is putting in the cogged idler pulley - and it just takes a bit of time with "fat fingers" .
Gloyale
the white marks on the belt itself. do i align those with the notches or the arrows on the cam pulleys? Unless you have a Genuine ubaru timing belt, i would disregard those lines entirely. I've gotten aftermarket belts were those line were just plain wrong. They were aligned with the teeth and valleys of the belt in such a way that 2 of the lines could never align with the marks on the pulley. When I installed the belt properly, the lines ended up off. one line was 1/2 tooth left and another was 1-1/2 teeth left. But all alignment marks on the engine were correct and it ran perfect when fired up. Subaru has marked the crank gear and the cam gears so you don't need the lines on the belt. Just align the pulley marks(dots, not arrows) all straight up and install the belt. Make sure all marks are at dead on straight top and you'll be fine
davebugs
Mark the old belt before removal and compare it to the new belt to see if the lines are the same. I've used Dayco and Chinese kit and I believe they had the marks. Dayco on 2.2 and 2.5, Chinese on 2.2 Dave
EVOthis
.......i always count the teeth as a last check before i crank her over......for the 2.2 i believe between the passanger side cam sproket and the crank there should be 44 teeth (mark to mark) and between the drivers side cam and the crank there should be 40.5 teeth (mark to mark).......just another tip which at least proves helpful to me.....
