Question with a pic

OK, 1987 GL, 5SP D/R, carbed EA82. In the pic below, the red arrow points to the actuator for the second barrel on the carb. The other end is plugged into the carb itself. I have not really worried about it before but, I don't think the back barrel is working. I don't think there is any vacuum from where the hose is installed. My question is this: Does anyone know what to plug the vacuum line into to get the rear barrel to work as it was supposed to? Thanks.

Yes, I pulled the line off of the carb and sucked on it, the engine revved up when the back barrel opened up. I don't know if it is working while I am driving though. Really can't feel it, and the car still won't hold 70MPH going uphill.

Uh....... 70mph uphill is pretty good for a 84 HP car.

 

 

I guess if you really want to test it, plumb a *T* into the vac line to the secondary pot, and use a few feet of tube to set up a vac gauge in the cab and go for a drive.

or, plug the tube on both ends and see if the car behave differently. You can also put a long vacuum hose onto the secondary barrel and into the cab, suck on it while driving to see if the car responds (it will probably accelerate)

From the looks of the outside of that carb, the inside could look like this:EA-82_008.jpg

 

You are due for a rebuild or replacement, probably. That power valve you see in the above pic has one .020" hole in it for fuel enrichment when you're at full throttle. This takes the fuel mix to about 11:1 when you're going up those hills. The one you see in the pic was clogged up.

If you put a vacume gage on the car, plug it in to the port where the vacume advance for the distributor goes. Or the port right above the idle speed screw. Those are manifold vacume sources. My Sube, just like yours will show 21 to 23" of vacume from those ports. That's good.

 

You can't have a good vacume reading without good compression. Another Sube just like yours only pulled 15" of vacume from those same ports. Headgasket failure was the cause.
