88xt6joe
Any good ideas how to get the axle nut off? I got the 36 mm socket and a big breaker bar but it won't budge. Any ideas would be great. Thanks, Joe
calebz
couple of feet of pipe over the breaker and stand on it.. Always works for me. Good luck PS.. I am assuming you don't have access to an impact wrench
88xt6joe
No I don't have access to a impact I wish I did I guess I'll try some more bar. I thought about heating it up. Joe
Wasteland
In a pinch I've put the breaker bar on the axle nut and put the car in reverse and SLOWLY backed up until it broke free. never snapped a breaker bar or socket.
subiemech85
Remove the pin! Rust penetrant, 3/4" drive ratchet, long pipe, jump!
GeneralDisorder
Some of these can be buggers - I've busted 1/2" breaker bars like twigs - don't even think about a ratchet.... GD
subiemech85
That's why I specified 3/4" drive ratchet, I have a nice Sears I am not afraid of returning! And you wonder why I return Sears and Break China so much :jollylaugh:
tjdrury
There is a special tool made for VW rear axle nuts that also fit our Sube's. It's a 1/2" thick flat peice of cast steel with a hole for a breaker bar and two flat spots on either side to hit with a hammer while applying pressure with the breaker bar. Check local VW/foreign (german) parts stores. Most will carry it by EMPI or possibly Dee Engineered Parts. Also available through Rocky Mountain Motorworks on-line or http://www.cip1.com I think. Used mine for all my axles when I did my 6 lug/ disc brake conversion. Good luck,

gravelRX
Asking the obvious but. You are trying to get it off with the wheel on and the car sitting on the ground, right? Jay
oddcomp
well the way i did it was the 3/4 in ratchet a impact socket and and 10 foot section of 3 inch diameter 1/4 inch wall steel pipe the pipe has so much weight /leverage to it that all it took me was one finger to push down on it hehe done 4 axle nuts that way 6 if you count my s-
MilesFox
heating the nut with a propane torch will help. heat it up till it starts to glow. pour water in the aaxle stub itself, that way it will help shrink it compared to the expansionof the nut itself. but i recommend this as one of a last effort, if nothing seems to work
