76subi wagon
Hi all, I just purchased my first Subaru, a 1976 DL wagon. It's Vital Orange with a five speed with front wheel drive. It's got some minimal surface rust, and one of the parking brake cables is busted, but other than that it's in pretty good shape. The engine needs some work, but I think that is mostly related to the Hitachi carb. Based on what I've read I think I'm going to try and swap it for a Weber. Anyhow, I know someone who has a Weber 32/36 off of a Pinto and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I would need to get it onto the Subi. Also, how can I figure out what size engine I have?? Most all the stickers are no longer readable, and I'm already tired of looking like an idiot at the part store (right before they tell me they don't have my parts). Also, and this is a long shot, but does anyone in the portland, OR area know the status of 1st gens in salvage yards around here, or anyone with their own "private" salvage yard? Thanks! Subieguy
Your engine should be the EA-63. 1.4L engine.
stumpy
Welcome to the board. There were two motors available in that year: The afore mentioned ea-63 1400cc and the ea-71 1600cc There is more info at this spot on this site: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/specs/general/1976dlwa.html Don't know about the local yards but have some 78 parts myself. Flowmastered87GL
Welcome I am in PDX as well, though I dont have any classics anymore For the above referenced engines, look down at the engine block while standing in front of the car. There should be a little square stamped into the engine with EA71 EA63 or something inside the square. EA71 is a 1.6 liter a 63 is a 1.4 I hear there is a good yard out in Forest Grove or Carlton or something... but I havnt found it yet
moosens
In that year the 1600 was only available in the automatics.
stumpy
In that year the 1600 was only available in the automatics. The spec page doesn't show that info so thanks for sharing. It also claims there wasn't a 5sp available in that year! My parts are from an ea-71 so not much help there I imagine.
76subi wagon
Thanks guys. It appears that I have the 1400. I'm not sure about the 5-speed, but I'm thinking someone must have replaced the 4-speed at some point. I went to the U-pull it off foster and the guy said they don't have any 70's at any yard, so that was kind of a bummer. I have gotten the Hitachi running fairly well now. Someone had the throttle cable set too tight, so even with the adjusting screw all the way out it was getting too much gas. Once I readjusted the cable it started running a LOT better. Unfortunately, the idle control screw is pretty worn at the end. I'm going make a new post for that.
