1) I grounded pin 50 of the ECU (B84) so the ECU now is in the manual transmission mode. There was no wire in the connector at pin 50 so I installed one and put it to ground at the ECU mounting bracket.

is this for the EGR code? this would probably only work for the 1995 ECU's then? probably wouldn't work for later models would it?

good job!

swapping to a later year ECU would not have worked. my 96 Legacy would not run on a 95 ECU, but 96 and 97 were fine.

ok.there is some great info in here about comparable probs i am having.

only i put a 95 2.2 standard engine in a 97-98 outback with auto trans.

no egr on the replacement engine, originally an egr vehicle.

what does the ecu do when it is looking for a standard tranny,as opposed to an auto.

i am about to drill a port in the exhaust header and add my own egr port.

we were thinking about putting a resistor in line to fool the ecu into thinking that there is an egr.

but, what resistance would i need to do it?it states that it is at 1 volt just like the purge solenoid control valve that ed was talking about.but that is in the "on" position.the off position has different values for both engine on and engine off with key on .

i really need to find a solution that is long lasting.any insight is appreciated.cheers, brian

in 1995 the auto's had EGR the manuals did NOT have EGR. the ECU's were coded to not look for the EGR inputs in manual transmission vehicles in 1995.

in his case, having a 1995 vehicle all he had to do was make the ECU think it was a manual trans vehicle and it's no longer "expecting" EGR input. he did that by grounding one pin.

my idea was to use a 1995 ECU in a 1997 vehicle and make it think it's a manual, to accomplish the same thing, get rid of the EGR. but i tried and the 95 ECU doesn't work in 96+ vehicles for some reason. must be a wiring difference.

for 96+ vehicles the ECU's changed so what works for him doesn't necessarily work for others. that's why i was asking how he found out which pin....to see if that works on 96+ vehicles.

since nearly all 96+ soobs have EGR and there was an ECU change after 1995 i don't have a good feeling about it.

anyone figure this out yet. I have 2.2 from a 1995 leg auto that I put in my loyale standard trans. I wired the wire from pin 78 to the starter relay but that did not work,so I dissconnected it and checked for voltage .there is 4.75 volts on that wire.left it dissconnected and the lite stayed off for about 4 days.went to start it today and the motor backfired and then started and the lite came on .I will try and put a wire in pin 50 and ground it and see what happens.

lmdew, i sent you a PM. I'm having the exact same problem, but I swapped a 96 manual into a 97 auto. MY 96 2.2 had NO egr, the 97 2.5 did. Its throwing a code for the EGR and for the Auto trans p1702 and p0403. Are these coming up cause it still thinks the car is an auto? IF I make the ECU think its standard should both these codes go away? It runs great, the idle is a little screwy which I'm thinking might be because it still thinks it auto. Oh and I used the 96 ECU, since its now a 2.2 and not a 2.5. Why is this ECU even looking for EGR? The car it came from didnt even have it.
