jelly man
I purchased an ej25 from tigerjapanese in Toronto and I'm really wondering about it. It's supposed to be a 96-98 EJ25 non-turbo. It is an EJ25 but the exhaust headers join at the front and then run along the right side. The pipe ends in a flange near the rear of the engine that angles slightly upward. There is a mounting plate bolted to the head and engine block just below the top of the engine that has two holes where something was mounted. The way the plate is rusted it looks like it had something very hot mounted to it - like exhaust or a turbo. Supposedly there were no turbos in the US for those years. Were there any turbos in Canada or Japan at that time? I tried a compression check on a couple cylinders by cranking it by hand on an engine stand and I could only get 15 psi. It takes about one second per revolution with a half second pause between cranks to reposition my hand on the wrench. I've never cranked an engine by hand before but 15 psi seems ridiculously low. The wiring harness plugs in the back on both the right and left sides. The idle air control valve is on the left side. I've attached a couple of pics so someone can tell me if it is a turbo and if it's from Japan or not(why would the exhaust go to the right on a right side steering car where there's no room?). I'm guessing that it's from the 96-98 year range also??? Any answers would be much appreciated. I just don't want to waste time putting an engine in that I'll just have to take out again. I can still get an ej25 from another friend for $600 - $700 with 120 k on it.
idosubaru
the hole in the head is probably the EGR valve port. nothing i'm reading sounds like it's a turbo engine...but of course i might not be reading your description right either. sounds to me like you got an EJ25 without the EGR valve on it. does it have the intake manifold on it? aircraft engineer
you need a differential compression tester (go look it up at harborfreight.com) that and a long breaker bar and 22mm socket to hold the crank. Then a bottle of oil to squirt in and do a wet test
jelly man
I had to use Internet Explorer to upload the fotos. Mozilla wouldn't work.

Seems like you are describing the turbo exhaust too. On the top of the block in the alternator area it will say EJ25,EJ20,EJ22 etc. see what it says there. You can't spin an engine by hand fast enough to measure compression.
jelly man
The block clearly has EJ25 cast into it. No mistaking it. If I could figure how to upload the photos I'm sure someone could recognize it. Fotos are up!

To post pics got to http://www.photobucket.com and upload them there. Then just copy and paste the IMG tag into your post here. Or email me a pic to tomrichdale@yahoo.com and I'll post it here for you. If I saw it I could probably tell you what you have.
subaru360
You got the pics working here now. I think that might be some sort of frankenstein engine. It looks like a turbo exhaust to me. But I don't think there ever was a JDM EJ25 turbo. All the older JDM turbo engines are EJ20's. My guess is that this is something somebody put together at some point and not a factory engine, possibly an EJ25 shortblock with EJ20 turbo heads and intake? idosubaru
sweet - that is a turbo exhaust. don't know what that means about the engine.
FSRBIKER
Looks identical to the 2.5 I bought from TigerJapanese as well. I ditched the exhaust, intake and wiring and swapped my stuff onto it. I had to drill the head for the EGR and I also installed new head gaskets as a precaution...this was when I found out it was a hydraulic lifter engine and might require premium gas. I have a thread on that but so far it runs fine on regular gas and I am very happy with my engine purchase.
FSRBIKER
If these were truly turbo engines anyone have specs on them? Compression ratio, valve/cam specs, etc?
jamal
I don't think there were any turbo 2.5s until 2004.
