2F1R Suby/dub
Hello all. Last weekend I was pulling the parts to do a 5 lug conversion off two different cars. Both were automatics, one an XT6 the other an Impreza. I was wondering about the differential attached to the auto tranny. They look like they are bolted together seperate units. Can anyone confirm this? It looks like the bellhousing is attached to the differential case onto which the tranny is bolted. Is that correct? Do they share oils, or is that seperate? Next question is about the 5 lug wheels. Are they hub centriclike the 4 lugs are, or are they more lug centric? Will 5X100 wheels, meant for frontwheel drive cars, from oter brands fit? Thanks. Dave Allen.
PoorManzImpreza
4EAT, subaru 4 speed automatic transmissions have seperate diff and transmission cases, the transmision case is lubricated by atf and the diff housing is lubricated by gl-5 hypoid gear oil. FWD and 4WD 5lug hubs are hub centric and both share the same hub centering flange, toyota 5x100 will fit the lug pattern but if I recall the hub center is is smaller on toyotas...not sure.. but the offset is definitely not the same at +45 vs +53 for subaru..(although XT6 is +45 as well so...) idosubaru
the front diff is bolted to the transmission. in the auto's like he said it has separate fluids for the trans and diff. in manuals transmissions the front diff and trans share the gear oil. the front diff comes off but the backlash adjusting when reinstalling one is very crucial to get right, so there's not too many people that do it. someone does have a good thread on here about it though with some pictures i believe. 2F1R Suby/dub
Hi guy's, thanks for the replys. In building my 2F1R project I am using a 2 wheel drive front crossmember, and Honda Goldwing for power. I have set it up using the FWD transaxel running 5th and reverse (the Honda has it's own tranny), or by using a rear diff in place of the tranny. Both will work, but there are issues about length. Thats where the front diff may be of use. It looks like it will be much shorter than either of the others. The rear diff is an LSD unit out of an '88RX, but the long snout is a problem he shorter snout from a Nissan 240SX is still a bit long. I'll lose the reverse by doing it this way, but I can overcome that. I think the shorter diff may be the ticket. I wanted to go with the 5 lug hubs more for the taller available wheels than for the anything else. I guess I should just keep looking for the right set of Suby wheels. Cheers. Dave Allen.
