96 Legacy Outback/Brighton Radiator Hose

Recommended Posts

hi we noticed a burning almond smell coming from the car.

The upper front radiator hose was torn and leaking coolant on the engine.

The car seemed fine though it was not overheating or anything.

I pulled it off and replaced it then topped up the coolant resovoir that was a bit low. Also I pulled the radiator cap off and ran the engine till the new pipe was hot and topped up the radiator.

Is it good to go do I need to do anything else to replace coolant or bleed it?

If you had the bleeder screw out and filled until coolant came out the bleeder hole then I'd just check it a couple of times for the next few days and keep an eye on the temp gage. In case you don't know the bleeder screw/plug is on the passenger side of the radiator it's square with a phillps head. Be gentle with it they break.

Screwbaru offers great advise. I agree with everything he says. I would also suggest checking the radiator coolant level and over flow container when the car motor is "stone" cold, such as in the morning after the car has sat over night. That way there is no heat expansion of the coolant in the cooling system.

Sounds like you did quite a good job already. I normally wait for the radiator fan to switch on, before I mount the rad cap. That's the way to be sure the thermostat is open and the coolant is circulating and has purged all the air.
