86 gl wagon (new to the forums and somewhat new to the car)

Recommended Posts

ok i have a carbed 86 gl wagon ea82 that i just got for 150 bucks under the idea of using as a run around car. it ran before it was parked about 3/4 yr ago when the alt went out so i got it 2 days ago and yesterday i replaced:

fuel filter (the one next to the fuel pump by the tank is that the only 1?)

plugs

plug wires

altenator

air filter

oil change

oil filter

today when i get home (i work graveyard) im going to change out the:

pcv filter

pcv valve (oem from what ive read on here)

flush radiator

new thermastat (oem from what ive read on here)

new antifreeze mixture

cap

rotor

clutch (which i need some help on because i never have done one on this type of car and the last time i did one the tranny was already off the car so it was alot easier)

1st question is there anything i missed that should also be done

2nd question is after everything that was done on the 1st day (plugs and what not) im not able to get it to start worth crap and after fighting with it for about 5 min it finally starts but i cant let my foot of the gas because it will just die and i cant let it go below 1200 rpm or it dies

3rd question is i rolled down the back left passenger window (power) and now it wont go back up to save my life (trash bagged it for the night) is there some subaru voodoo i can perform to get the window to actually work right except the drivers because it seems to work fine

now im not new to the old school subaru because i had an 82 that i got for $200 that barely ran that i brought back to life the pretty much the same methods and it ran great and i cleaned it up real nice but then the head gasket blew but i fixed sorta... explanation i fixed everything but it still leaked antifreeze which i thought was from the head but after i sold it for 250 (because i thought it was broke) turned out to be a 3 dollar intake manifole gasket that was just dripping on the head so i lost a good running car (30+ mpg) becasue of an idiot mistake and the guy that bought it just trashed it and now it looks like some white trash mobile so im trying to not have that happen again so any help would be greatly appreciated and thx in advance oh yea sorry about the uber long post

Pull the fuel line off and turn the key on, just to make sure the fuel pump works. But it sounds like you need to open up the carb and clean/rebuild it. The only other thing would be to take the timing covers off and visually inspect the timing belts. If you replace them, replace the oil pump, and water pump too, it's the best time to do it and it probably needs it.

Good luck.

The hook on the end of the bimetal choke spring is broken off. You'll find it resting in the bottom of the choke housing.

Good luck finding a good one.

The window is just the switches - clean the contacts inside the switches. Don't lose the tiny parts when you dissasemble them.

"having" it rebuilt isn't practical - there's few that know these carbs.

You could rebuild it yourself - the kit's are about $20 to $50 depending on where you get one. And you'll need the choke housing - either a good used one, or a new one from the dealer.

Then there's the Weber 32/36 DGV route - there is a kit made for the EA82, or you can buy the carb and get the base adaptor plate seperate. These aren't technically street legal, so you may have to either be creative with your install to hide it, or deal with the emissions police. All depends on your area.

There is also the SPFI conversion - by far it's the best running and driving of the three, but it's also a LOT more complex of an install. You can read my article here about EA81's. At the bottom is a link to Snowman's original write-up which was geared to EA82's.

jesus that seems like alot of work for a dd that cost $150

You get what you pay for. By the sound of you're name I give it 6 months.

Remeber, it's not a $150 dollar car. It's a car you only spent $150 on:grin: . That means you should feel OK about having to spend more to keep it running. If you don't want to spend money on maintainance and repairs.........Get a bike.

There may be some broken wires in the door jamb that is causing that to happen. When the door is closed, then the wires are making connection.
