J A Blazer
The bearing in the driver's side front strut mount has gone bad in my 2000 OBW with 110K. Should I replace both, on the assumption that failure of the other can't be far behind?

That is a REALLY surprising failure in a car that new. Just trying to confirm that it is the problem.
idosubaru
good point, if it really did fail i'd wonder if something caused it...some kind of water or debris in the engine bay or from underneath.
J A Blazer
Just wondering, what are were the symptoms and how was it diagnosed?? While replacing the front axles, with the struts removed from the hub, I could tell that it was binding, particularly when compared with the other side which turned freely. Also, there is an audible groan when turning.

J A Blazer
It now appears that the mount had not failed, but a previous mechanic had forgotten to reinstall the spacer that sits between the spring cap and the strut mount. I now have the spacer, which is like a big tapered washer. Does anyone know whether the narrow part goes up or down?
