stray
anybody know how to reset the airbag computer after deployment? i've replaced the bag, and the other components were not damaged at all by the impact. the dealership says it's $85 to scan it and "we'll go from there" - i assume that means they'll want me to replace every component in the whole restraint system, before they'll clear it. my local collision centers said they send them to the dealership and let the insurance companies pay for it. i'm hoping someone on here knows if there is a DIY procedure to clear it. thx... bheinen74
in all practicality, it will be better (and cheaper) to go get air bag control unit from a non-wrecked junk yard car. I got my whole bag, unit all for 50 shipped from a seller on one of these boards, so the unit alone shouldn't be but like 20 bucks, and that is lots cheaper than paying a dealer 85 to suggest you buy new. You can buy the tamper proof torx needed for this a well for like 10 bucks at sears.

(they did break the green/yellow safety clip on the computer, but that's what zip ties were made for, right?) nobody had grey, though. blue is close enough for me. everything is hooked up and good-to-go, no codes. thanks again for your responses. idosubaru
stray, thanks for the follow up. i'd like to fix one of mine with a similar situation - front end, air bags deployed. one bag is replaced, the light is still on and non-operational obviously. did you check the sensors on the bumper? did you just replace the air bags and computer and that's it - all was good and the system is operational now? stray
stray, thanks for the follow up. i'd like to fix one of mine with a similar situation - front end, air bags deployed. one bag is replaced, the light is still on and non-operational obviously. did you check the sensors on the bumper? did you just replace the air bags and computer and that's it - all was good and the system is operational now? i visually checked the front crash sensor - the hit was above it and it was unharmed. i don't know what the procedure is for checking the sensor, i've read some people say they are one-time use and need to be replaced and others say they are re-usable. i'm going with the assumption that if the airbag computer doesn't throw any codes, all is well. the only advice i would give anyone replacing the computer is to be careful unlatching the green/yellow secondary latch holding the main connector. there is a metal wire spring under the green latch, it needs to be pressed inwards, then you can raise the green latch. the jy broke mine removing it, and it is necessary so i had to do some fabricating. other than that, it's pretty straightforward. for some reason, i'm getting 2 cel's after the accident: #35 purge control solenoid or circuit & #49 mass airflow sensor. wonder what caused that? :-\
EVOthis
one test i have always felt is reliable to check the MAF is....with the engine running take the butt end of a screwdriver or use your fingers and tap on the MAF....if the engine stumbles or stalls....well than you have a bad MAF sensor...... idosubaru
stray - you still around? i just got done installing all the air bag components (bags, seat belts, computer). everything is hooked up and good-to-go, no codes. did you have to do anything other than install parts? when you started the car, the air bag light went out on it's own? you didn't have to reset anything? if the stuff all came from a good car with the light off...then it shouldn't *know* any different once installed in another vehicle right? wanted to make sure before i reinstall the fuses and turn the thing on.
