Air Conditioner question

I posted this in the "Historic" forum, not much response, (Although I do want to thank Grossgary for his suggestion), so I thought I would try here, where there seems to be more activity....if that's okay with the Mods and everyone else.

 

I have a '1980 Brat, EA71, and when the AC is running, the car will barely stay at an idle when you pull up to a red light or stop sign. And there is a weird "growly" noise under the hood somewhere. The AC works really well when the car is at speed going down the road. And the "growly" noise goes away.

I have checked the pulley and it seems to be fine. That was one of the first things I did check, because the compressor went out on one of my trucks I use to have, so I knew to check that first. The problem is that unless I keep the car running at high RPM's when I stop at a light or whatever when the air conditioner is on, it almost stalls out. I was thinking that maybe there was some switch or something on the idle setting that bumps it up when the AC is on that wasn't working properly. I searched here and in the HTKYSA, and couldn't find anything about it. Maybe someone with a service manual could help????

I'm not sure about EA71 but on my EA81 Brat, there is a vacuum driven actuator that pulls on the carb throttle lever when the A/C solenoid lets vacuum to it.

 

Mine is broken and past attempts to get one didn't lead anywhere - I'm still in search of a replacement..... Have mu idle speed set higher to compensate at the mo.

 

Problem is that Subaru never fitted A/C in the factory during the early days... A/C was added at the dealer and could come from a number of manufacturers - Mine happens to be Hitachi.

The throttle kicker mechanisim is broken. Look around the carb linkage. There will be one little diaphram, that is your choke pull off assembly. Thats i linked to your choke plate.

 

Now if its a vacume kicker, it will look like the choke pull off. It may be an electical solenoid. It will press against a little tab on the throttle linkage. You can suck on the diphram to see if it works, or apply 12 volts to the solenoid.

They are fairly generic. A good mom and pop autoparts store amy be able to match them up.

 

Look for any parts numbers on either one.

Hey thanks for the info. I just came on to look up that same problem I have with my EA81 Hatchback. I just got it switched over to the new Freon. I will try and figure this out here because I am no mechanic.
