Didnt Pass California Smog... Now i need a few things PICS!!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello to all! Got that 87 GL-10 and let me tell you a few things that kinda pissed me off....

First i didnt pass because of visual. that just makes me angry. if my car isnt polluting, WHY cant it pass??? grrr (gripe gripe *************** moan)

ok! so i just got a set of gen 3 heads, and when i grabbed them, i also grabbed the intake plenum, and some other things.

Check this out...

DSC04855.jpg

The top one is mine with that baffle thingie on it. when i grabbed the second one off of the gen 3 motor, i noticed it didnt have a baffle. thinking nothing of it, i grabbed it (since mine has a few cracks around the inlets). this intake piece is TOO SHORT!!!!! by an inch! what the CRAP!?

So! I need the following.....

1) Idle Purge control thingie shown here...

DSC04854.jpg

and from the above picture, an intake plenum with baffle (i guess, my car is an 87) and hoses 1, 2, and 3. if they're hard as rocks and wont come off that plastic hose, i'll take that as well....

SO!

1) Intake from MAF to Turbo inlet

2) Idle Purge (whatever its called)

3) Hoses 1, 2, 3

THANK YOU!!!! (should i post also in the parts wanted??)_

I cannot get my car back on the road without these things, and they have to not be cracked.

STUPID SMOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:dead:

I can paypal TODAY to get stuff moving... i need to pass smog!! thanks!!!!

no worries man! thanks for the reply, i dont think theres any turbo cars here in chico, i'll be in the bay area on the 9th of may, maybe i'll hit it up then.

the guy said my car looked like it would breeze thorugh emmissions, so i just have to get the idle down (its at 1300, instead of 800, probbaly because of that broken idle valve.... the physical nipple broke off the unit) and get those hoses replaced and plenum taken care of..

... and i SHOULD be good :)

For #1, I've had good luck *repairing* them.

Completely degreaseing the whole boot inside and out. In the kitchen sink, with tons of Dish soap. After drying, filling gaps with a bit of RTV wiping away any excess. Then wraping tightly and repeatedly with electrical tape. If you can lay the tape tight and without folds, it might not be noticed. I use real hose clamps for the PCV hoses, instead of the original spring type clips.

For #2, that solenoid can be replaced with one from other types of vehichles from the 90's. Isuzu, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, or even newer Subarus. You have to get one that is the right type (normally open or closed, vented or non) but any JY should have one somewhere that can be used.

For #3, 5/8th Evap rated hose is available from Carquest, Napa, and others. Doesn't have to have the funky bends. The Plastic *F* shaped unit can be replaced with a simple *T* to make hose routing easier. 3 inlets either way.

1 and 2 may not fly for the Smog guys, but 3 should be completely acceptable, provided you use Evap hose. SSK (Subaru, Suzuki, Kia in Rancho Cordova will likely have the intake and a solenoid)

Once you button all that up, there is a good chance you're idle will drop to normal. If not, and there are no other vacuum leaks, the idle can be adjusted by the recessed screw on the back side of the Throttle Body.

Or just go to someone that'll "smog" your car. I usually don't condone this kind of stuff, but I know the crooked smog shops are still around, and California smog is such BS.

When smog shops run your vehicle through the tester, it logs your vehicle information and the shops information. It then forwards this info to the DMV.

If later on down the road, you get pulled over by a cop. And he visually inspects your car and notices its not smog worthy, the DMV will then contact the shop who passed you, and they will most likely do an investigation.

For this reason, most smog shops will not just "smog" your car. Ive had a couple places refuse to test my RX because the engine code did not match the VIN. They don't even want to risk the chance of anything comming back on them.

Its a pretty messed up scenario. Its not just the emissions we gotta deal with anylonger.

Well, there went that idea. I did it a couple of years back, and had an offer to have it done (for a higher cost) about eight months ago on the coupe.

They aren't called "smog nazis" for no reason, now are they?

Too bad you're not close to Arizona.... that's the ONE reason you could stop by and visit

SSK (Subaru, Suzuki, Kia in Rancho Cordova will likely have the intake and a solenoid).

Hate to say it but they don't deal in the EA series any more, just the EJs now. Tried finding parts for my EA82 through them and they laughed at me. Not to mention they charge an arm and a leg ($1000 for USED WRX front and H6 rear brakes for the brake upgrade for my Outback) and don't REALLY know that much about Subies (went in looking for an LSD for my Outback and they say Subaru quit making them in the 80s, meaning no the RS's didn't have them as an option nor the newer Outbacks:confused:  ).

The shorter one is for early Flapper MAF style engines. 85,86 all and early 87 XT turbo.

You need one for 87+

thats a great idea, and i read it both times you posted (hehe) i just dont want to get there, and they point at it and say, sorry... and i'm out another 45 dollars.. and thats how it would go.. so! if i can just buy a non-cracked one, then im golden, yes?

thats my angle, thank you for the idea though!

Well, there in lies the problem. Even the best ones I've ever seen still have the beginings of cracks, and need some wrapping/resealing. Ordering a brand new one would be $500 bucks or some crazy price.

You could have one Fabricated out of thin metal tube of appropriate diameter, and use silicon boots at the ends to clamp it in place. I would think they would have to accept that.

Remember, that tube is NOT an emmision device. It is a tube with five holes. 2 at the ends, 2 for pcv(5/8"), 1 for evap(1/4"). Make a tube with the appropriate holes and the engine will never know the difference.

As long as the replacement tube is sealed, and has all the PCV hoses hooked into it properly, all of you're original emmisions components will be functioning excactly like stock.

Make a fuss, demand a *referee* if you have to. Take it to a different smog guy if you have to. It will be less work and cheaper than buying a non cracked intake tube. They basically don't exist.

Uhh, that listing says *all models* 85-89. which cannot be correct, 87+ are different. He'd need assurance that he was getting the correct one.

But I guess that is a good price.

Yeah pretty sure that's the one I ordered, but I agree it's best to call them up. They have great service and they'll give you the right part number to order off the web site. I've ordered a bunch from those guys. :)
