another thing is the exaust ports look wet is that normal?

88rx.

Is the crack between the valves or is it in the exhaust port? There is a big difference. Between the valves is no big deal, we all have seen it and

Subaru even says that it is normal. Between the exhaust ports is bad as that is where the water jacket is located. If the crack is in the exhaust ports, you will have to replace the heads. I do have a set of good ones, so just PM me if you want them and we can work it out.

let us know where the crack is for sure. you said exhaust port, if it really is in the exhaust port then another set of heads is in order. if it's just between the valve seats, it's not a big deal. it's hard to find any EA82 or ER27 that doesn't have those, every single one i've ever pulled has them.

well one side is fine it looks like no cracks in the exhaust port. they both have cracks between the valves. and the pass. side has cracks in the port. so can i get one new head or do i have to replace both:confused: and would it be worth the time to send the exhaust port crack one to a machine shop or is too far gone?

You can replace just one head. It all depends on how much they are going to charge you to weld the crack and weather or not you are willing to trust it. When this has happened to me I just replaced the head that was cracked and wen on from there.

Problem is that most of the *new* heads are gone. Getting used ones, you are likely to run into the same cracks.

I have mine welded.

The other best option would be a head from a non-turbo XT, and fit it with the turbos return oil pipe. The non turbo heads are not likely to be cracked.

I have two ea82 heads that came off an engine with bad rings, so locating a good head is done, if he wants it. Is this a turbo car and is this going on the turbo side of the engine? I may still have a good turbo side head in my parts stash, but I would have to look tomorrow. Give me some details to work with.
