96 EJ22 to be installed on a 95 EJ22 Legacy...

Recommended Posts

It is my understanding that for the 2.2 the 95 is the only year of the dual port exhaust. If this is correct and your 96 2.2 is a single port you will need a new exhaust y pipe. Take look at and your new engine to confirm. Other then that no issues.

awesome! exactly what i would have done, excellent choice! latest non-interference you can get, low mileage....awesome engine!

you'll just need a single port exhaust header from a 1996+ EJ22. it'll bolt right up.

your existing 1995 header will not bolt up to your new 1996 engine.

Make sure the Starter bolt/stud configuration is the same.
it should be, that shouldn't apply to these years/engines.

The 95 2.2l heads had individual ports for each cylinder. I did not know that the 96 2.2l had a single port for both cylinders... Lets hope you can get the headers with it... The rest is just cut'n'weld if they are not whole

what exactly dual or single port mean? just want to make sure
dual port means the heads have two holes for the exhaust and single port means there is one hole in the head for exhaust.

just crawl under your current car and have a look. you'll see "two" pipes coming off the bottom of the engine. your new engine will only have one.

the exhaust pipe needs to match the engine (holes in the heads). a two hole header won't fit on a one hole engine or the other way around.

2 port heads = 2 port headers

1 port head = 1 port header

1995 EJ22, all EJ18's and all EJ25's = 2 port heads = 2 port headers

1996+ ej22 = 1 port heads = 1 port headers

yup confirmed

the new engine is a single port, i just hope i can find a Y pipe by friday

They are hard to come by, most yards cut them. I have few stashed away for future projects, I spent a lot of time in the U pull it finding them. If all else fails I'll send you one, but I'd need one back at some point.

Ok, let me know. I don't want to sell it, but you can use it for a few months or whatever. As long as I get either that one or another one back it's fine with me.

awesome, nice hit!

yeah i've run into what GLoyale mentioned before. takes some searching to find one and find one that someone will sell.

The 95-99's legacys the converter isn't part of the y pipe. I think it is on the older ones.
