HELP with axles PLEASE!! :)

Recommended Posts

good day everybody!

ok, so i need some help. badly.

i removed all the axles on my 91 XT6 so i could replace torn boots and re-grease them. they all came off as solid 1 piece units. i read the USRM guide, and several other threads before i got started. to remove the rear axles, i used a 2x4 and sledge to pound the axle free of the hub, and then dropped the diff to complete the removal.

now, i cant get the rears back into the hubs. i'm 99.5% positive that they're going back in the same side they came out of, as i labeled them before removal. i did swap the DOJ's once they were rebuilt, to use the "non torqued" side of the guts inside, but the DOJ isn't what i'm having so much difficulty with, its the CV joint end. the stupid things (because of the stupid operator  ) won't go back into their hubs. ("go home stupid ball, don't you just want to go home?!" . . . the first one who can figure out where thats from is exempt from helping me with this thread  )

i actually managed to get the driver's side rear in, but only because i was fortunate enough that the hub's stub part of the axle separated from the rest of the axle while i was pounding on it  and even then, i really had to beat on the end of the stub to get it back in the hub. no such luck with the stub on the passenger's side, it won't come off the axle no matter what i do (and yes, i removed the spring pin) so short of pounding on the diff's end of the axle which just doesn't seem like a really good idear, i don't have any way to muscle it into the hub . . .

none of the threads i read made it sound this difficult, what am i doing wrong?! how do i fix it?

HELP

axleless in everett . . . :-\

I do believe I have the factory subaru tool for pulling the axle through... but maybe its just for the fronts?

You could borrow it to give it a go if you'd like. I'll try and grab a picture of it tonight if you think that will help.

I've done axles on escorts and eclipses.. never had trouble getting hem back in. getting them out has always been another story.

I think you are onto something with how you got the other side in. use lots of penetrating oil, for the piece that goes through to the hub.

and it couldn't hurt to beat on the diff side with a 2X4 and hammer. just push the slack out of it before you strike it. so you don't clank the axle inners together.

Have you tried taking the axle off the stub and working on it that way?

Someone said the stub may be hung up on the sleeve that seperates the bearings. Have you pulled the stub out and tried looking to see if its dropped and in the way?

ok, i've got the computer in the garage now . . . (always dangerous)

i cant get the hub stub off the end of the passenger side axle, i beat on it (beat on the bell it goes into, not the shaft itself), used pb blaster on it, even pryed gently with a short prybar . . . it won't budge. looking down the empty hub hole, it doesn't look like anything's dropped, but it wouldn't take much to get in the way . . . i'm gonna try some heavy grease in the on the bearing assembly to see if it won't stay in place and let the axle slide thru . . . wish me luck

yeah, that bearing sleve is definitely a culprit, filled the hub with lithium grease and can only get the axle as far thru as before (tip just about to the outside edge of the hub)

time to try zukiru's idea i think . . . 2x4 and 'the persuader'

BFH is my favorite tool!

And if that doesn't work, you've always got your BFG

Maybe my mis-spent youth is showing through a little today...

I had the same problem with a recon cv axle on my Brat.

I had to switch it out to the other side of the car and they fit well enough.

I had to pull the axle off and try to shove the cv shaft in from the outside of the hub to prove it wasn't going to work.

My next option was going to be using emry paper to clean up the surface of the shaft and then re-lube it with grease to see if I could have gotten it in.

Good to hear you got that bad boy on there finally. Sorry that I have not helped you one bit with the XT but I had to go back to work. Trust me I would love to go work on Axles rather than Drive a truck that just wants to break in half. I'll give you a call in a few.

If they don't slide right in, you need to dress the surface of the shaft. Abrasive cloth and a file or piece of sharpening stone will get them in shape.

Coat the surface of the shaft in anti-sieze then thin it with a drop or two of oil. That will help it slide in smoothly.

Careful insertion will avoid binding - rotating and working it side to side can help.

Forcing it will only result in it binding more.

Pounding them in is actually quite bad for the bearings as you are impacting the balls between the inner and outer bearing races. This will cause beaing failure in pretty short order. Expect to be replacing them soon. You can also easily gall the shaft or the bearing races doing that.

The factory tool pulls them in without impact but should still not be used unless the fit is smooth and no binding is encountered.
