subaruguru
hey i got my gf a 95 impreza with the ej18 it sat for a while and when we first started it it had a tick and then went away it ran good drove it for about 2 or three days and it progressivly started to pop through the intake wors and worse you get it higher in the rpms and the pop kinda subsides but then it has likea knock not a hard knock but constant one could i be a timing issue the car has 260,000 miles on it and im thinking the timing belts might have streched a little and jumped a tooth. any info would help. idosubaru
i think the EJ18 has HLA's? i would look that up. is it HLA ticking or rod knock? i know older gen stuff with HLA's get diagnosed with "rod knock" and it's really much more benign and only HLA noise. it can be VERY loud, like sounds like a diesel and seems like you shouldn't turn the car on...but it's not really that big of a deal. aside from that, check your timing gear. make sure the tensioner isn't loose or faulty and replace the belt with a known good used one. compression/leak down test might come soon after if it really is a bad problem, i'd wonder if you have a valve problem with all that back firing? EVOthis
yes i had that problem with the HLA's a while ago on my 96 ej22 and i just came out started her up and i heard them ticking away like extremely loud fuel injectors (it kind of sounded to me like a valve tap)...took her for a drive and added some marvels mystery oil to the oil filler neck and nothing has come back since.......i do believe the 1.8's have HLA's and if i can remember correctly they are significantly larger than the ones on the 2.2's...... subaruguru
ok im thinking this mihgt bea factor here i was i nthe car the other day and realized that it has 271,xxx miles on it do you think the timing belt could be a little worn and streached justa little? im off to do the belts now but cant do the timing as i dont know how and my hayns only covers ej12,ea82,ej22,25,
EVOthis
im sure its possible that it is stretched......if you have done the t-belt on the ej22 i dont think the ej18 is all that much different if at all.....that is alot of miles......do you have any history on the car in terms of engine work? montana105
Gary has some great suggestions. Your timing belt or any other belts should have nothing to do with your symptoms.I think your byline says it all ***k fuel injection in diagnosing your symptoms, have you cleaned your injectors at all, even with the store bought shelf crap? Does Seafoam work on these symptoms?
subaruguru
well put a can of seafoam in it along with injector cleaner and changed the tranny fluid filter but yeah drove all the 670 miles from ellensburg to california and it ran great the whole way filled up in madras ore. at a quarter of a tank i just dont get how you oregon people can let other people pump your gas it bugs me lol. but anywho when i got here it had a god awful TOD but after i got off the freeway it went away it started to get hot when i got here turns out i forgot to plug in one of the cooling fans so it was only gettign the air from the freeway on one side but plugged it i n and she runs like a top. also is there anyone around oroville, scramento or chico that has a hood and passenger side headlight for a 93 impreza ?? and posibly a grill ?? if so i would really like to buy them hopefully cheaper than a PAP but we will see thanks Rob.
