car stalling when coasting at freeway speeds

I am having a problem with my EJ BRAT.

Sometimes when I am on the freeway and I shift into neutral and coast, the engine will shut off. I then have to bump start it.

What could be the cause of the shutoff?

Neutral switch signal to the ECU?

Neutral switch signal to the ECU?

hmm.. possible. Will see it I can splice something in there. I guess I can hook it up to the brake pedal since I do not have a clutch switch.

If you're brat has an EJ transmission, it should have a neutral switch.

can't say anything about the conversion but some vehicles will cut out that have speed sensor issues as well. in my experience they are very predictable as to when they'll cut out. the same speeds/hills/decents/spots, etc.

haven't had a neutral switch hooked up for 30k miles. never happened.

just hooked up the VSS last fall (about 15k before that). again, never happened. noticed no difference in the way it ran after the VSS, it just stopped throwing the code.

checked the codes? I'd start there. also, what's your exhaust/intake setup? have either changed since you first got it running? if the ECU learns one setup, you can have problems if you change it and don't reset the ECU to relearn. I had a few issues when I changed out my exhaust setup, then I reset the ECU and it got better.

what was the EJ donor vehicle?

Donor is an EJ18 FWD Impreza. I am using the stock EA81 4 speed tranny

no error codes. I get an intermittent CEL blink b/c i spliced the temp wire to the temp gauge.

VSS is hooked up to the reed sensor in the cluster.

Exhaust set up is the same. I am probably going to disconnect the battery to reset the ECU.

It's not predictable as to when it cuts off. Speed varies and conditions vary. The only constant factor is that I usually am just done with accelerating and I move it to neutral to coast.

It happens intermittently. Enough to be bothersome but not enough to be a problem. I usually look at the tach when I do decide to coast so I can catch this.

Yesterday it happened once on my 25 mile drive to work, and it didn't happened at all going home.

My wagon likes to "fall asleep" sometimes when the RPMs drop. As soon as I get the car started again it behaves itself until next time.

It has a code for the air control valve just next to/behind the throttle body on the passenger's side. I can't remember the valve's proper name.

I filled it full of Deep Creep a few times and it occurs less often and is easier to "buffer" by easing off the throttle more slowly.

It probably doesn't help that I have an XT6 flywheel on the wagon  but a little more seafoam therapy should help a lot.
