Hi-

I am swapping out the timing belt on my 1995 Legacy.

At some point I screwed up the timing, and now need to get the crankshaft set back to TDC.

 

My plan was to just set a screwdriver in first cylinder sparkplug hole and crank till it reached its apex.

 

However I do not know which cylunder is number 1.

Can someone identify the order of them for a 1995 legacy 2.2?

Front of engine

 

 

Pass side 1-2 Driver side

Pass side 3-4 Driver Side

And to create a mental image of nipper's layout, picture yourself under your car on your back and looking up at the engine!!!

 

But why do you need to get #1 to TDC? You can hang the belt according to the marks on the crank and cam pulleys. Just make sure you use the right ones!

Wait, you can set the crank at TDC using a mark?

(I did not mark it before I dis-assembled)

 

I know the marks on the cams, but there is one on the crank?

What is it and where does it line up?

Ok, to be clear.

On the back side of the sprocket there are 3 little nubs. One of them is sort of behind the arrow. I should align that little nub with the small indentation on the block?

there is an triangular arrow on the crank sprocket....dont worry about that mark.....when your putting on your timing belt use the mark on the BACKSIDE of the crank sprocket.....DO NOT USE THE ARROW......... http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/2.2SingleOverWin01.pdf

On further inspection, is it is a little indent in the back of the sprocket?

The arrow ends up being about half way down, at 3 o'clock?

 

 

Ok, to be clear.

On the back side of the sprocket there are 3 little nubs. One of them is sort of behind the arrow. I should align that little nub with the small indentation on the block?

You've got it. The arrows wind up at 45 degs clockwise (1:30 o'clock) on the cam sprockets, 90 degs clockwise (3:00 o'clock) on the crank sprocket.

Counting the belt teeth as in the End Wrench PDFs is a good way to verify alignment.
