Venting?

Recommended Posts

I want to put some functional vents in the hood of my 1983 GL offroad toy.I want to reduce underhood temps and improve airflow through the radiator by increasing the difference in pressure from the front of the radiator to the back(engine side) of the radiator.Hopefully the combination of both of those should make the car never over heat.

Ive heard that vents towards the front of the hood are best for lowering the air pressure in the engine bay due to the vaccuum when air travels over those parts. That would help with flow though the radiator.

I also want to vent the hot air that gets trapped by the firewall.Which would make everything under the hood not as hot so maybe the car would run cooler and have more power? However I have heard that if vents are placed toward the windshield it will act more like a intact rather than exhaust port. That would force air under the hood which would make the air pressure under the hood increase, which could stall air flow though the radiator.

so if I want to improve radiator effiency and lower underhood temps, where would be the best place to put the vents? The goal is to have air flowing out of the engine bay rather than in.

Thanks in advance.

Vents in the hood arn't going to do anything for an EA81. It already has plenty of airflow on the underside. If (like a Honda, ect) the engine were transverse, and slammed up against the radiator.... you might have a theory. But beleive me there is no "vacuum" created in the EA81 engine bay.

If you want cooling the recipe is simple:

New radiator.

New thermostat (OEM).

New fan thermoswitch.

Add EA81 A/C fan.

Add EA81T oil cooler.

Add Autometer coolant temp gauge (oil pressure and voltage while you are at it).

And address the typical voltage supply issues to the stock cluster so all your gauges are reading correctly.
