I'm down for some subies in the forest!

had a dream last night that I was driving around and ran across some guy in a tan ea81 wagon... then we both started driving around the forest...

I've got my ea81 wagon for adventuring... mostly stock but working on it... got the rear discs on, and an lsd waiting to be put in... gotta see about cranking up the suspension (and getting it aligned)...

I'm mostly ready to go any time, but I'm waiting for my kid to be born (due date is tomorrow) so I might be kinda busy the next couple weekends...

Sign me up!

(but you already knew that)

You know my rig.

26" tires.

Lifted as high as I can without major mods. (did an inch in the back cause I didn't have to drop the diff any and now I carry more gear)

"Open diffs for life!" (as a yota driver with 40 something inch tires yelled at TSF a few weeks back as he cleaned a nasty trail)

Not afraid to put it places the welded up, mud tired crew thinks twice about.

I've had wheels up in the air like that in slop before. Not "quite" as nasty as that but managed to get through.

Guess years of always prefering to run the underdog machine in whatever it is I'm doing have gotten me to the point of always finding a way. :)

I'm sure I'll give in and weld up one of these days. But I havn't really found the need to just yet. Guess I'd rather get stuck every now and then rather than risk breaking stub axles. I hate doing repairs on the trail.

Plus all the heat, pb blaster, and BFH work in the world has not released either of my rear axles yet for the pavment travel once I weld it. :-\

I've not been to sand lake. Hoping to make down there when you come down. (even put a flag mount on the Soob already)

Gas $$$ are starting to make it so I don't want to go much further than the Mt. Hood area any more though.

i'm up for it! just let me know when and hopefully something doesn't pop up to keep me from going out. :-\

86' wagon about a 2' suspension lift,

235/75-15 m/t or 29/8.50-15 swampers on 6 lug wheels.

rear welded diff. and lots of dents.

84' wagon D.D. stock suspension cranked

215/70-14 Blizzaks on Pug wheels.

LSD rear diff.

Guess I'd rather get stuck every now and then rather than risk breaking stub axles. I hate doing repairs on the trail.

you know if i'm there i'll pull you out . i've never yet had to do trail repairs after breaking a stub axle, i just pull the axle out like normal when i'm done and delt with the broken stub later. but when i recently broke the axle shaft between the 2 joints i had to pull both ends so they wouldn't fling around and hit anything not much to that on the trail. it does kinda suck if its raining out, thats why i carry that mat around with me.

hell just spend the money and get you an LSD like my 84' has you'll be happy with that.

i'm with Scott on this on this too!

I know i've had my 86" in a few situations like that. but, as usual :-\ , i wish i had the pictures to prove it.

I know a trail like that we can get pics at. Up on Lolo

I have some pics in my gallery with a rear tire about a foot and a half in the air.

Able to run that one both uphill and downhill. And not by doing the normal "Subaru run up", I like to creep on the trails.

All about line selection. :)

I really just need to get a Jeep with 80:1 gearing. Would fit my prefered wheeling style better.

I barely have the $$ right now to put a clutch in my rig, let alone a LSD. :-\

Now we need to get back to the outing planning. My clutch isnt fully gone yet!

And I'm itching to go out again.

I am buying a diff to weld

I've been thinking the same thing for awhile. So I can give it a try and if I don't like the hassle on the street I can just go back to the original.

But I enjoy the crap out of it now the way it is and that's what it's all about anyway. :)

thats what its all about is enjoying it.

ya, a welded diff can be a hassle at times, its really not that much though and you can choose to either run locked or not. but the frustration of trying to follow someone up a trail and you hit this one spot that kicks your just right that you can't past and knowing that if you had your diff welded it wouldn't be anything. thats what got me, it started happening way to much.

of course i was running with alot of modded jeeps, toys and various other rigs so i had to keep up with them or be left in the dark. usually didn't run much with stock rigs and the few that did always stayed on the road and waited for the others to come back down what fun is that. well, i didn't want to wait, unless i had broken something and had no choice but then sometimes i wasn't the only one waiting because of that.

I just wish there was a way to have no worry of breakage.

Then I'd be all for it.

But I'm still of the thought that I'd rather pass up a trail or not do a climb than break an axle. (I know breaking things is part of wheeling, but if a rear axle full on broke like yours did Chaz. It would proly end my wheeling for the season, no extra $$ for the soob these days other than to feed it. So I stay open to be easy on the parts)

Of course I proly wouldnt have to worry with my smallish less aggressive tires. Traction on both will proly give before a stub axle......

Maybe I should just put the LSD'ed solid axle out of my RX7 in it..... I think I can get 3.900 gears for it if it's not already....

heck that sounds like alot more work and money to fab, i'd just stay open for now until your able to weld or put a sooby LSD in it. i mean your having fun with it and a good time with just the way it is so heck just stay with it open for now.

I'm the same way... I want to be able to go places a normal car can't, but I don't get disappointed when I can't follow a jacked up solid axle vehicle with lockers up a gnarly climb...

mine is a daily driver, and it's not convenient to break things to the point I can't make it down the hill... luckily, if I'm with experienced sube people they generally know how to disable the axle so that I can still drive on it...

Yeah it proly would be. Something I've been kicking around for a long time though since the engine in the RX7 died.

Be kinda un-subaru, But tossing the front suspension, engine and tranny out of the soob into the RX7 body and wheeling that would proly be bizzar too. (they have a very similar front suspension design, proly not too hard to make it work)

Have to mod the Watts linkage in back to lift it though. Make some long arms. (its 4 link)

Win the lotto, to make these crazy ideas real.

But here we go getting away from the purpose of this thread agin.

hehe

  • 3 weeks later...

It has several electrical gremlins, one being the AWD. Works when it wants to but most times it can be persuaded to co-operate with the proper massage technique to the dash!!

Don't like to take it out by my self as walking out isn't a good option.

Going to read up on doing the manual switch and see if that will bypass the gremlins. Then I would be more comfortable wheeling it.

Sign me up.

89 GL Turbo, adjustables cranked up for front, 2wd rear shocks, massive fender trimming and 27 x 8.50 Firestone *Wilderness* All Terrains.

My computer illiterate, often mentioned buddy George (Gemini) will surely want to bring his newly lifted 91 Legacy.

3inch lift blocks, Outback Struts, and as of yet undecided tires. (probably 235/75/15 mud tires) For a total of about 5 1/2 inches lift. Sick. Oh yeah did I mention roof rack from a 2003 Outback?
