Will this work?

Hey,

I have an '86 GL-10, and would like to swap the driveline from an automatic '92 legacy turbo that would be imported from japan. I would like to use as much of the donor car as possible. As far as my reading has shown me, the front end will be pretty straight forward. The wiring suberdave tells me, that if it has an OBD1 ecu won't be too hard, and that the only custom work so far would be shortening the driveshaft a bit. But for the rear suspension.....is there an alternative to the XT6 parts, are the XT6 hubs knockles, and axles able to take the extra hp/torque? I had read somewhere on here that someone was doing a swap using the donor car's rear bits, but I can't seem to find it, or even know if it was abandoned or what it took to accomplish. Could the Crossbred performance 5 lug conversion kit be an option?

Ok well I've taken ehough of your time thank-you for reading this, and if you have any pointers, or tips that'd be great.

And BTW the tranny is/has to be an auto (for now) because in order for this project to get the green light , my wife has to be able to drive it, and she will also be the main driver of this car, because I already have my subie ;) (that she doesn't feel comfortable driving)

You're going to need the TCU for the Automatic. IIRC the trans tunnel may need to be pounded out to fit the 4EAT.

You can get a crossmemeber off a *fulltime 4wd* automatic GL Turbo or XT. I'll tel you now, cut the *ears* of of the rear trans mount or they will knock against the inside of the trans tunnel. I learned the hard way when I swapped a Legacy trans into my GL.

Thanks John, the plan for the front is to just use the leggy's bits throughout for the 5 lug convert. But for the rear end I'm wondering about alternatives to using XT6, in case I am unable to find the parts I would need, or even if there is just a better option.

mixthetoo is retrofitting rear impreza stuff onto a BRAT. last I e-mailed him he was not done. If you look at the new EJ rear suspension it's completely different and you will need some mad fab skills to make it work.

XT6 rear hubs are pretty much the only was to go to get the 5X100 right now. I am working with a machine shop to make some 5X100 adapter plates. Will let you guys know when there is some that is viable.

I guess you should also consider that the rear diff on all soobies are essentially the same. Slight differences exist in the way that the rear axle goes in, but that's it.

My GL-10 is a 1.8T Automatic w/ the push button 4WD on the shift handle. Can I use the TCU(transmission control unit right?) that is in the wagon now?

Has he been keeping a log of his progress on here? Thanks, and for the record I have NO fab skills, so I guess I should start looking for some XT6 rear suspension/hub parts.

Uhm I've just searched for "mixthetoo" and he's not on here,is he on another forum?

No totally different monsters. The Legacy has a 4EAT automatic in it so it has a computer (the TCU) to control the shifting and such inside the tranny. Your car will have the 3AT which is a mechanical automatic so it doesn't have a TCU. Only way for it to work is to get the tranny computer, and wiring harness from the Legacy into the GL-10.
