The one in Red, the $300 Alpine wagon, is slipping out of gear in fourth and fifth.Pretty much any Subaru 5MT after 1990 will fit your car as long as it has the correct final drive and clutch (push or pull type). If the 5MT doesn't match, you can change clutches and rear drives in order to match. check that - only EJ series vehicles will swap. EA/ER stuff (Gl wagons, XT6, XT's...etc will not work). To keep it simple (and cheap) any impreza or legacy trans will work up to 1997 (1990-1997). Later models will actually work as well but will require some customization that's not worth it since these transmissions are so easy to find anyway. The only issue is matching the final drive of the trans to the rear diff. To change the final drive ratios there's no "clutch work", just have to match the rear differential gear ratio. You do have to make sure that the clutch type of the donor transmission is the same as the transmission currently in your car. Otherwise, you will have to do modification. Otherwise, you will have to do modification. oh yeah, that's a big deal. in general any impreza up to 1997 or legacy with an EJ22 up to 1997 as well will have cable clutch (like your legacy). not sure which EJ25's had hydraulic clutch but i think all the EJ25 GT, LSi, and sedans i've seen were hydraulic. not sure about the wagons but a lot of EJ25's won't work because of the hydraulic clutch. oooo Posted June 9, 2008 Share Posted June 9, 2008 didn't the 1990-94 legacy manuals use a mechanical speed sensor(?) I think thats what its called, in the transmission to read mph and the 1995-1999 and up have a electronic speed sensor in the transmission so I don't think it would be compatible with your dash cluster, but I'm new to subies, so I could be wrong, maybe somebody more knowledgeable or who has taken them both apart could answer this definitively.
