Odometer Discrepancy

Recommended Posts

Last summer I swapped the clusters on my Brat. The one I pulled had about 234K on it. I replaced it with one that had 65k. Now the time has come for me to sell it. I state in the ad that it has been swapped before. Will this create an issue when I sign it over to a new owner? I assumed that since its so old, it is exempt from any mileage checks.

I'm not sure of the laws in your state, but I'd be willing to gamble that they are very similar to the ones here.

Most vehicles are exempt from mileage checks at either the age of 10 years, or once they reach 100,000 miles. That is a pretty standard law, adopted by most states. A quick call to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (or Tennessee's equivilent) should confirm any of this.

See previous reply(ies)...

However, considering age and mileage, a formal disclosure on a bill of sale or transfer of registration to the difference of mileage at the time of the replacement should suffice, considering the other person's (buyer) presence and involvement in the transaction. OR, fill out an "Odometer Disclosure" and hope that it can be "post-dated".

each state has different laws. but either way it will never create a 'problem'. worse case scenario is some states mark the title for it. like "mileage not actual" or "mileage exceeds mechanical limits", and that will show up on car fax reports and stuff like that. but that's not big deal, it's just in place to protect buyers from unscrupulous sellers. they have various phrases but it all basically means what the odometer says isn't too be trusted as actual vehicle mileage. but it can't create any "problems" with the state, title, or buyer if that's what you mean. sell away and no worries (at least, so long as you're telling the buyers, which you are!).

i was in crossville TN a couple weeks ago! got completely confused that it was in a different time zone, that was bizarre! i always forget how far west i'm going when i go south. up here - 5+ hours from time zone. in atlanta - 1 hour.

This is what became of the broken old one

it doesn't really fit in with your butterfly motif...

...

but yeah, on the bill of sale or title there's a box you check that states it's not the actual mileage... at least that's how it's been in the two states I've owned cars in... I've never had to check that box, so I don't know what kind of extra paperwork it creates... but it's not a problem, just a procedure...
