offroadsubaruguy
followed the diagram exactly, and heres the problem. the lights are on all the time, except when the low beams are on. high beams, the lights work, low beams, they dont work, everything good so far....... turn the car off, and the hellas are still on...... i undid everything and tried again. this time i noticed that the relay clicks when the ground wire is connected......... any ideas? i've tried everything i can think of and i get the same result every time, im out of ideas..... im trying my best to not use the supplied switch. im lookin to have the lights go on with the high beams..... mellow65
couple ways you could do this. understanding relays is pretty easy. your basic ones have 4 wires. one from constant power, one to your lights, one to a ground, and one to a switched power. the two wires that are always going to be the same are the constant power and the one going to your lights. the two other wires would control when your lights go off or on and are the ones you need to mess with. one way would to be to ground one wire and get power from your high beam headlight. that way they would come on when you turn on your high beam. then if you added a switch to the ground side (running in your cab) you would be able to turn them off or on even with the high beams on. another way would to tap into the wiring harness coming from your factory light switch. most cars now a days have the switches on the steering column control grounds. so if you give power to one wire on your relay and find the high beam wire and use that as your ground. but still put a switch in line so you can control it. sounds worst then it is, you just have to think about it as one side needs power and the other needs a ground and how you do that is up to you. SubPar
The wiring diagram for Hella driving lights is confusing to say the least. I'd recommend not wiring the lights into your high beams, and just put a switch on the dash. KC's wiring diagram is what I used to wire my Hellas. http://www.kchilites.com/faq/instructions/4-PoleRelayDiagram.pdf
joostvdw
Something else to consider, the hella wiring diagram probably assumes switched power, but subies have switched ground, so that makes stuff a little backwards. If I were you, I would wire them with a seperate switch, relay and fuse and don't mess with the original system.
Uberoo
I dont get it?wiring lights are simple. You need a FUSED power line from the positive battery.then you need a wire from the relay to ground, then you need your signal wire so the relay knows its time to turn on.That signal wire should come from your high beam wire.then finally just a wire to the output,in this case lights. offroadsubaruguy
ive never had this problem before, i have no clue why its doing this. all i know is that i am not going to mount a switch to my dash, or anywhere else in my car unless i absolutely have to...... untill that day comes, im just going to have to find someone to help me with it that can actually look at it in person and help me figure it out..... thanks for all your replys,
njdrsubaru
i just installed hella 500s on my 95 wagon you can add another rear defrost switch and use that for a switch, thats what i did to mine. I used a relay and inline fuse, it works great! i set it up so i can turn them on even with the car off. if you need a diagram i can draw one up for you good luck Neo
