ac clutch pulley mod?

Ok.. so the RX still has a charged AC system. I decided to keep it intact and now I am trying to use it. The RX AC compressor uses the old style v groove belt, the EJ crank pulley uses the flat belt with the ridges.

 

1) is it possible to remove the clutch pulley and put on an EJ type clutch pulley.

 

2) if that is not possible, is there a way that the v groove can be filled and made flat so that the flat belt can used?

Doing so almost always dooms the bearings in the compressor. You could try it' date=' but you'll likely end up with bearing failure shortly after.

I'm sure NASA could figure out a way, and spend half a million doing it. Outside of that I can't think of anything that would hold up. The problem with serp. pulleys is that they wear and end up cutting through the belt when they get sharp. This is why you often hear people with shrieking serp belts....

 

No - better to just go with the EJ compressor and rent the proper equipment to pull a vacuum and charge the thing.

You might be able to use the pulley from an AC equiped XT. They had a a multirib belt.

 

*Note* Subarus do not use "serpentine" belts. They only run the pulleys from the grooved side. Serpentines go back and forth around and over all the pulleys of the motor, some on the "flat" side. What we have are simply mutirib belts, not serpentines. They really aren't meant to be bend both ways.

So what you are saying is that if I pull off the electric clutch pulley from the EJ A/C and put it onto the EA compressor, the bearings will be compromised? please explain.

I was thinking more of using a couple of tubes of quicksteel or maybe gorilla glue a rubber strip wrapped around the pulley counter-clockwise (compressor rotates clockwise. if the rubber is wrapped counter-clockwise, it will tighten with the rotation of the pulley) Yeah I know... this is really redneck fabbing, but isnt this what this place is about?

I am not sure if the EA fitting will work with the EJ compressor.

use the ej compressor and have a custom hose and hydraulic shop fabricate some custom lines for you. The ea and ej compressors are very different...

Having said that if u DID manage to get an xt compressor which has provisions to run twin 4 rib poly v-belts (the correct term for the multi ribbed belts that people call 'serpentine') you could rig up a mount for it and run it with existing hoses and the right length belt..that is about as 'ghetto/redneck' as I'd go :grin:

 

btw..it is a good time to put in some new o-rings in the system and a new dryer...and some r134a compatible oil..
